The Amarillo school bond proposal goes to voters Saturday with support for new elementary and junior high space while critics urge revisions to high school plans. The editorial argues against defeating the issue to force changes and cites past local voting patterns as a guide.
Amarillo College Auditorium hosts a town hall on Should the School Bond Issue Be Passed with a debate by R A Wilson and H Sim Kelly for the affirmative and C O Towne Al Reville Jr for the negative. Civic groups oppose the three million dollar plan earmarked 400000 for Amarillo High additions. Ernest Finney serves as moderator and the event includes audience Q A and a closing summary. Admission is free.
Tonight's town hall forum at Amarillo College Auditorium will be broadcast by KAMQ KFDA and KFDA FM from 8 to 9 PM. A delayed transcription will air on KLYN Friday at 8 PM.
The draft plan by Troy Jones Jerry Little and J Humphrey with Finney calls for a regular monthly town hall in Amarillo. Some sources report Amarillo residents doubt civic understanding will gain broad support.
Absentee voting ends at 5 pm today for the school board and bond election. Ballots may be cast at the office of George Waddill, business manager, in the administration building at 500 Johnson. By 5 pm yesterday 25 absentee ballots had been cast.
Four candidates for the Amarillo school board joined about 50 residents in a meeting sponsored by four civic clubs to discuss the April 1 election and a proposed three million dollar bond issue. The panel included Selvin Allen Nathan Martin Clarence Giles and Herbert O Willborn with F S Finch as moderator. Willborn and other board members weighed federal aid and the need for more high schools while noting current cafeterias and space pressures. Continued on Page 4.
FBI Chief J. Edgar Hoover told a crowded Senate Foreign Relations subcommittee that disclosure of the bureau’s secret files would cripple the agency smear innocent people and endanger informants. He urged keeping loyalty records confidential alongside J. Howard McGrath who warned public airing would damage government loyalty efforts.
The Supreme Court rules 5 to 2 that Eugene Dennis US Communist Party secretary was properly convicted of contempt for refusing to testify before the House Un American Activities Committee. He faces a year in prison and $1000 fine with a separate conspiracy conviction carrying five years and $10000. Justices Black and Frankfurter dissented. Douglas and Clark did not participate.
Secretary of Defense Johnson said defenses are sufficient despite Eisenhower warning they fall short. He spoke after a White House conference with President Truman at the Key West base. Johnson noted budget figures and said future talks with Eisenhower would be fair and not interfere with congressional testimony.
A Plains inquiry considers artificial rain as a solution to worsening wheat crop prospects. The Daily News explores the New York City rainmaking program using silver iodide, with potential future radar aided work for widespread Plains rainfall.
High Plains winds linger with partial reversal of dust and light precipitation. Plans filed with the city engineer outline two large modernistic commercial buildings at the Plains Boulevard entrance of Green Acres. A 224 by 100 foot irregular structure will house a drug store variety store and space for six shops. an 80 by 137 foot building will be a supermarket. Parking surrounds both. The rental project will include 346 dwelling units in eight two story buildings plus 172 two bedroom apartments in eight two story buildings completed recently and 112 units to be started next Monday.
Cal Davis of the Roosevelt Bar was found guilty of bookmaking on September 23, 1949 and sentenced to $500 and four months in jail. Attorney George McCarthy said a motion for a new trial will be filed, with an appeal planned if overruled. Jury panel included W C Whitecotton and others in District Court.

Amarillo Jaycees planned a 3 05 am welcome at Amarillo Air Terminal before a Pittsburg hop and a New York flight. The visit follows the Universal Understanding plan linking US and foreign Jaycees. Geiger will stay with local Jaycees and install president-elect Dan Hig.
