A judiciary body files five charges against an Eastern Illinois jurist in a formal report. The case outlines alleged misconduct and seeks review by higher authorities. The report details specific counts and the jurist’s defense remains pending.
Formal articles of impeachment against Federal Judge George W. English of the Eastern Illinois district were presented to the House judiciary committee. Five articles allege abuse of power, corruption and favoritism linked to bankruptcy official Charles B. Thomas. A minority report urged against impeachment citing insufficient evidence.
Washington March 25. A uniform traffic code for motorists and pedestrians was adopted at the closing session of the second national conference on street and highway safety. The code covers vehicle registration, titles, licenses, and highway operation. Hoover urged local community action over centralized government and the conference urged pedestrians to obey rules with fines for infractions. The conference also recommended a general coordinating committee by Secretary Hoover.
The Senate took up the Italian debt settlement while the House immigration committee began hearings on deportation bills. First quarter income tax collections were estimated at 435 million dollars. Senate elections committee voted 10 to 1 to unseat Senator Brookhart. Articles of impeachment against federal Judge George W. English were reported to the House. The Senate asked the Justice Department for the amount spent prosecuting Senator Wheeler.
The senate adopted a Wheeler resolution by 61 to 130 asking the department of justice to render an accounting of money spent in prosecuting Senator Wheeler of Montana. It seeks the total cost, the number of people engaged, and salaries paid, covering Montana prosecution and a district of Columbia case that was quashed.
Chicago March 25. Robert Lafferty, 24, suspected of aiding police, was shot to death in a basement apartment after two men posed as policemen to gain entry. Police believe the slaying removes a key witness against William J. White and Thomas Shupe, suspects in robberies exceeding $171,000. White is also linked to the slaying of a suburban motorcycle officer.
Texas Rangers A P Cummings and Charles N Davis were withdrawn from Cald well Burleson county where they had been sent March 14 over the fatal shooting of Constable Garret White on March 18. W S Houston a special agent is jailed at Belton Bell county in connection with the case as the pair returned to ranger headquarters.
The Sabine River broke its banks at Logansport as a three day rise ended. Forecaster L H Daingerfield warned flood stage is five feet with no damage reported due to timely warnings. The Trinity is projected to hit twenty five feet at Liberty within thirty six hours as other rivers show slight rises.
Wire dispatch from Jacksonville March 25 reports a blaze destroying the R A Watson company plant at Valley City. Early estimates put the loss at about 500000 dollars.
Milledgeville Ga March 25 Ted L Coggeshall of Clayton NL and Floyd McClelland of Brocton NY were executed for the March 4 1925 murder of W C Wright Putnam county school superintendent. The father and brother witnessed the deaths as Coggeshall declared innocence and the father urged his son to live. The executions ended with the man and his brother departing the chair room.
Hearing set for April 5 on Santa Fe thirty mile road into the oil field prompts Rock Island Railroad circles to consider a formal protest. Commissioner Boles will oversee the Amarillo hearing on the Panhandle to oil field line. A S and Stinnett says Rock Island has not decided yet after talks with President Gorman and other officials in Chicago.
Fort Worth reports D. M. Haley, 19, kidnapped from his home by five men in an automobile. He was taken to town edge and given forty lashes with a strap, ten lashes from each of four men. Afterward he was told to face away while the car departed, then walked home two hours later. Haley, secretly married last summer, learned his wife had died in childbirth last week.
A tornado swept through Orangefield and surrounding oil fields killing Glen Keenan, 24, and injuring eight others. Dozens of oil wells went wild, wrecking derricks and buildings, with extensive damage to homes, the Presbyterian Manse, and the Orangefield school. Wire service disrupted until crews arrived from Beaumont and Port Arthur. Communication and repair efforts were underway by night.
George L. Cassiday, the man who fled the capitol with six quarts of liquor, was arrested at his Washington home by prohibition agents after a Capitol visit sparked by Senator Blease of South Carolina claiming bootleggers frequented congressional offices.
Republican from Iowa faces last ditch battle to save himself as Sen Brookhart loses bid. The contest marks a tight race with high stakes and political pressure in the Senate battle.
Washington reports the Senate Elections Committee voted ten to one to unseat Brookhart of Iowa in favor of Democrat challenger Steck. A subcommittee’s unanimous report found Steck won a plurality and should be seated after a full recount and hearings. One Democrat Senator supported Brookhart, while two Republicans and one other Republican declined to sign either report.
Harris Bell an Austin attorney indicted Tuesday by the Travis County grand jury filed a motion to set aside and suppress the indictment. He announced his candidacy for district attorney and said he would stay in the race to the finish.
More than 20 million automobiles were in use in the United States last year with 19,954,347 registered. Government owned vehicles accounted for 96.92 percent, totaling one car for every 6.8 persons. Revenue from registration fees and permits reached $260,019,621.
In New York on March 25 three men were stabbed and four shots fired during a clash as fifteen striking fur workers raided the home of William Levy, 65. Levy and family fended off the mob while police detained twelve attackers. Three detectives found three men in a taxi later treated for knife wounds. all arrestees face disorderly conduct charges.
The Polk Street Methodist Church will erect a 300000 building soon. The new structure likely will be on the church site at Fourteenth and Polk opposite the Junior high. The property at Eighth and Polk was authorized to be sold at the quarterly conference, with Jeff Blackburn and others appointed to secure the best terms.
LATE WIRE REPORT from Laramie Wyoming says David W. Baird died in Los Angeles. He once worked with the Laramie Boomerang during editor Bill Nye era and was a former chairman of the board of auditors for the International Typographical Union. He is survived by sisters in Laramie and Los Angeles and will be brought home for burial.
The Kansas City Star reports Mayor Albert H Beach has been chosen as leader and spokesman for the Republican state organization in Kansas City. The selection followed a conference here with Governor Baker, out of state GOP leaders and local representatives.
Six hundred striking textile workers converged from opposite directions on Ackerman and Randolph Avenues in Clifton and were routed by Clifton police clubs. The confrontation disrupted the area as authorities kept the peace during the march toward the plant district.
In New York on March 26, attorneys said a final bid for a new trial for Gerald Chapman, sentenced to death in Connecticut for murder, would be made tomorrow. The move hinges on several newly located witnesses including Frederick Groeh.
A gray haired Texas school superintendent, P N Powell of the oil field district, led 200 charges to the auditorium as a tornado approached. He kept order, calmed frightened children, and refused to let them panic while the building was struck. Powell, red of complexion with blue eyes and a gray hair, is famed for his leadership and as Orange County Teachers Association president.
A passenger train plowed into the rear of a freight train injuring conductor Lucas and engineer Coyne who were seriously hurt. The incident prompted responders to the scene and authorities opened an investigation into the derailment.
Three men were seriously hurt when Fort Worth and Denver passenger No. 7 struck the caboose of a freight train south of Texline at 9 15 last night. Conductor C W Lucas of Amarillo suffered leg and internal injuries. engineer Mark Coyne of Childress broke a leg and bruises. fireman T R Worth of Amarillo was scalded. None of the passengers were injured. the caboose and two box cars burned. The wreck delayed rail traffic for hours as crews cleaned the line and treated the injured at Texline hotel before transfer to Dalhart Hospital. No. 7 departed Amarillo at 5 30, three and a half hours late due to southbound delays.
Senator Root said France will not receive terms as liberal as Italy in funding her war debt to the United States. He spoke during senate debate on the Italian settlement plan, warning comparisons between the two debts are flawed. Senator Johnson challenged the agreement as unfair to American taxpayers. Senator Smoot noted remarks that any settlement with Italy would mirror France, insisting the cases are not comparable.
A midnight blaze in the Signal Hill oil field, Long Beach, California, destroyed two oil derricks and damaged a third. Loss was estimated between 110000 and 125000 dollars as fire crews from nearby areas fought to contain the flames threatening four storage tanks. The Wilbur McAlpine Craigwell No 4 gasser ignited the column, triggering the fire. Workmen pumped out storage tanks to prevent further damage.
