American paratroopers beat back two enemy assaults under heavy mortar fire near the Cambodian border. In the Demilitarized Zone north of there, seven U.S. helicopters were shot during clashes while Marines were evacuated. Navy jets bombed targets near Hanoi as part of ongoing operations.

FBI dig at a rural Lakewood area chicken farm uncovered two skeletal remains of Cosa Nostra underlings. One body bore acid damage, another bound with wire in a buried oil drum containing hydrochloric acid. Authorities indicated more bodies may be entombed as recovery crews worked the site five miles northwest of Lakewood.
The Supreme Court temporarily blocks Texas from leasing submerged Gulf lands for oil drilling while a dispute over state versus federal coastline claims is resolved. The action, issued Friday, requires Texas to respond to an injunction request by April 12 and affects about 16,000 acres of submerged land beyond the coast.
Thousands of sunburned college students surged from beaches into Fort Lauderdale streets looting trucks and clashing with police. Fraternity members chased a stolen car and the crowd cheered as helmeted squads moved in. No serious injuries reported and about thirty students were taken into custody.

Hereford plans final Friday to locate a beef slaughtering and rendering complex adjacent to the Hereford Feed Yards two miles north east of the city. Archie Sloan of Texas Meat Packers said land was leased from Hereford Feed Yards Inc on Santa Fe Railway tracks. Initial capacity is 83900 head weekly with 150 jobs, aiming to expand to 16000 head weekly and 300 more employees in the future.
