US Air Force search teams chased flares and wreckage 450 miles west of Ireland after a C-124 carrying 53 aboard vanished for 24 hours. Brig Gen Paul T. Cullen among passengers. Queen Mary in area. B-29 pilot reported flares and wreckage. RAF also sighted possible life raft.
The husband of an Amarillo girl, Capt. W. Peterson, 35, of Sandwich Illinois, is among 53 aboard a US Air Force C 124 reported missing off Ireland. Peterson, a B 17 veteran, was recently recalled to service and sent to Walker AFB Roswell New Mexico before joining the ill fated flight.
Lt. Gen. Ernest O Thompson warned reserves are short for defense needs showing Texas at about 50 percent of required levels. He cited district totals and national figures, urged renewed drilling, and noted depletion recognition as a spur for increasing oil production amid national emergency.
Panhandle prairie fire, the second in 24 hours, scorched five sections of grassland northwest of Wheeler. Firefighters from Wheeler, Mobeetie, Shamrock and Pampa fought a mile wide arc southward, threatening landmarks but causing no injuries. Origin and final extent were undetermined as embers died at dusk.

Two committees seek evidence of perjury or tax evasion. a New York firemen's union leader said he gave $10,000 in cash, which O Dwyer denies.
Washington March 23 The Army reduced its April draft call from 80000 to 40000 due to a rapid rise in voluntary enlistments and a expected decline in Korean casualties. Officials said May call remains 60000 and urged Congress to lower the draft age and create a standby universal military training program.
Dr William Duncan Silkworth aged 70, a pioneer leader of Alcoholics Anonymous and medical superintendent for alcoholics and drug addicts at Towns Hospital, died yesterday in New York City.
A widespread dust storm reduced visibility to about a mile in parts of the Tri-State area. Forecasters say topsoil from Kansas and Oklahoma contributes little to the dust, with gusts up to 42 mph easing to 20 mph by afternoon.
A 45 million dollar atomic plant to advance radiological research will be built northwest of Denver. Construction starts late April and the facility will be operated by Dow Chemical Co under the AEC Santa Fe office. Officials say it is not for weapons, will emit no dangerous waste, and is tied to Los Alamos laboratories.
