In a courtroom yesterday a pair of defendants denied coaching by state lawyers during the trial. The proceedings centered on alleged guidance given to witnesses and the defense challenged the legality of the questioning approach.
In Pryor Oklahoma on March 23 defense lawyers argued witness tampering in the trial of Mrs Anita Greer for her husband Leonard Greer’s murder. Two state witnesses Jesse and Myrtle Miller said they live with Sheriff Kelley since last Saturday to avoid rumors about testifying. Evidence included a reconstructed death scene and claims that Ben Schuh, Greer’s alleged lover, killed the husband so they could wed. Schuh was convicted last week and sentenced to life imprisonment. The witnesses described threats and a hammer blows theory, while others testified about wiring and lights going out before the body was found.
Mrs. Chaplin petitions the California Supreme Court for alimony and support for herself and children. The filing asks for counsel fees and begins May 1 as trial in the divorce suit proceeds.
In Denver on March 23 two men were killed in a gun fight in the Mexican quarter. Patrolman Elmer I Rich was shot and killed entering the house where the disturbance began. Amelio Lopez was found dead, and Mrs Ruth Amelio, his wife, is believed to be the wounded woman.
O C Wells an escaped convict is held in Abilene after shooting Julius Hart a Black man and severely wounding him. County attorney Frank Smith says Wells will be tried for assault to murder before handing him to prison authorities. Wells escaped from Harlem farm on January 1.
London reports an air bombardment by the Herm and two British cruisers destroyed Bias Bay a noted piracy base near Hong Kong after pirates overpowered a steamer Hopsang in a prior raid. No lives were listed as lost and authorities hope the pirate band is dispersed though many residents alternate between piracy and peaceful life.
George Hassell of Farwell wins another delay as Governor Moody issues an 80 day reprieve. A district judge ruled the death warrant illegal, and Hassell may face a Sanity hearing and transfer to a safe jail while his appeal progresses. The Pardons Board urged further clemency and a possible April 26 deadline looms if no reversal or mental‑capacity decision occurs. Cuban President Machado intends to visit the United States after recovering from influenza illness and leaving Havana on April 20.
William J. Edick former United States secret service operative and head of the New Orleans office is held in El Paso on charges of passing two counterfeit $60 bills and embezzling a pistol. He cannot post $10,750 bond and awaits a preliminary hearing Saturday morning.
Amarillo police testified in a libel case brought by Mr. and Mrs. W H Redwine against The News and Globe claiming libel over articles about silk clothing thefts. Witnesses described coats and silk goods tied to Redwines and a Houston store raid. The trial before Judge W E Gee continues with testimony from Marie Todd and others.
The jury for C. W. McCoy charged with the murder of Arthur Lewis, a Santa Fe railroad man, was selected from a 100 man venue. Testimony to begin at 9 o'clock as McCoy, who waived preliminary hearing, faces a common law defense.
The weather bureau warned the Mississippi below Vicksburg and the Atchafalaya will rise with levees holding. Expected stages include Natchez 53 by April 10 to 18, Baton Rouge 42 by April 15 to 22, Plaquemine 87, Donaldsonville 83 by April 16 to 24, New Orleans 20.6 by April 24, and Melville 48 by April 15 to 22. Amarillo citizens and business leaders backed a university drive at headquarters, with more than 40 000 dollars in lots sold and total sales reaching 140 000 as committees prepare further reports. Notable backers include J Ray E Burgens bank president Ware and Thompson, praising the project as the greatest for Amarillo yet. A luncheon at the Amarillo hotel Friday will hear committee reports and university plans.
In St Louis on March 23 the United States circuit court of appeals remanded a Kansas district court order that approved reorganization of the Kansas City Mexico and Orient railway. The panel voided provisions giving William T. Kemper and Edward Histed stock and cash for working capital, and allowed gold note holders to buy shares with court-approved compensation.

The move follows reports of Nanking and Changjiang capture and outlines a stance against anti foreign violence while seeking reforms.
