Washington March 23 Prospects of an immediate packinghouse strike were avoided through mediation by Secretary of Labor Davis Generous concessions by workers to the wage cut and by five large packers to a six month extension of the Alchuster agreement ended three days of talks with packers and workers and secretaries Davis Hoover and Wallace. The parties called the settlement a truce not a lasting peace with continued adjustments to follow. Davis said the agreement prevented a strike of very serious consequences and workers called it a preparation for further war while packers praised plans to settle mutual concerns.
