A North Korean official Lee Sookeun, 44, vice president of the Korea News Agency, defects at Panmunjom and flees in a car with a U.S. colonel as Communist guards fire about 40 bullets. Lt Col Donald E. Thomson reports the car breached a barrier near the conference building. North Korea claims the defection was forced by U.S. military police. The South Korea broadcast calls for Lee’s return and accuses the U.S. of aiming to undermine the armistice. An armistice meeting closes an hour later.
