The World Telegram reports in New York City mysterious secret agents search for a foreign scientist believed to head an espionage network. The fugitive left Switzerland and is said to have headquarters here while Robert Switz and his wife face aid charges in France. Police and Justice Department officials offered no comment.
San Antonio March 22 Rev William D Welburn Jr former pastor of the Government Hill Methodist Church is named as the defendant in a divorce suit brought by Wineta Long Wilburn Sr the plaintiff. The petition alleges a son born November 18 1933 and cruelty as grounds seeking 75 dollars monthly alimony. The couple reportedly married July 25 1933 in Kendall County and separated within the same year.
Washington reports substantial progress toward settlement of the labor dispute threatening an auto industry strike after a long White House conference with President Roosevelt. AFL President William Green said the talks yielded progress and the dispute remains in status quo, with a truce holding while negotiations continue.
The Crutchfield murder trial in Forty-seventh District Court is set to begin testimony at 9 this morning after a lengthy jury selection. Frank Crutchfield faces charges for the fatal shooting of Police Captain Preston Burnam near the Western Hotel on January 5.
In Washington the House voted 220 to 174 to uphold its lower veterans benefits and restore a 10 percent pay back to federal workers, sending the bill to a conference as President Roosevelt weighs a veto. The Senate had proposed larger allowances totaling about 118 million and full 15 percent federal pay restoration.
Grand jury begins probe into the death of Shirley Pauline Palmateer aged 3 who was struck by a car while playing on the curb in front of her home. Joe V. Moore Amarillo attorney in custody on murder and drunken driving charges. companion Mrs Burt Daniels freed on bond. Two other victims, George Henry Palmateer 2 and Elma Palmateer 5, remain in critical condition at St Anthony's hospital with skull fractures. Funeral arrangements for Shirley Palmateer to be announced.

Special to The News SHAMROCK March 22 G C Hill of Clarendon was killed instantly in a head on collision near here at 8 30 pm. Hill's wife and son C M Hill also of Clarendon and Mr and Mrs S H West of Shamrock were injured. C M Hill has a dislocated hip. He and his mother are patients in a local hospital. The Wests were not seriously injured.
Police traced activities of an American woman involved in a traffic in American, British and French secrets. Authorities hinted she may have played a minor role and had not decided if she would be questioned. Continued on page 19.
Harry E. Rowbottom, ex congressman and former prisoner for selling postmaster appointments, died suddenly at his Evansville home at age 49 from diabetes. He had served one term representing Indiana before his incarceration.
Vice President Garner states he will vote for Senator Tom Connally and not for Joe Bailey. He will not say if his support is personal or as an administration member. Bailey pressed Roosevelt about administration stance, then left the White House still in the race.
Texas relief director Adam R. Johnson met with state highway officials to free 8.9 million dollars in emergency relief for drought and storm counties. He will press National Director Harry Hopkins for release and aims to have funds available for Texas use despite prior restrictions.
Washington report explains why the $8.9 million road building plan in Texas flood and drought areas this winter did not spend. The Federal Relief Administration did not intend to build roads but used construction to provide relief. Only $3.85 million of the original estimate will be spent as current projects finish due to the Texas Highway Commission's refusal to designate certain details.

The Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association elected W. T. Coble of Amarillo as president at its 58th annual convention in San Antonio. J. Claude McGill of Alice became first vice president, with McGill also chairing a thorough resolutions committee that passed 24 measures. The group urged increased cattle industry research, transit and market policies, restrictions on canned meats, and tariff actions on hides and oils.
The Senate passed a bill giving the Philippine Islands until October 1 to choose independence, with freedom within 12 years if desired. The measure, 68 to 8, now goes to President Roosevelt for signature. administration supported it. Eight Republicans and no Democrats crossed against final passage.
Commander William R. Munroe of Waco Texas was named aide to Assistant Secretary of the Navy Henry L. Roosevelt. He will replace Commander A B Merrill of Natches Mississippi who April 16 becomes third in command of the heavy cruiser Pensacola.
In Canyon on March 23 and 24 West Texas State Teachers College hosts a two day meeting themed around Roosevelt's education crisis remark. Prominent speakers include Dr Fred C Ayer Hon J Galerie Dr Doak Campbell Dr W B Bizzell L A Woods J Loftin John E Hull and D A Hill. Attendance expected from teachers superintendents principals P T A members club women editors and other professionals with E F Chamness and Prof Frank Phillips calling for county boards to attend.
