Washington figures show middle income families pay twice as much tax as two decades ago while federal workers' average salary rose 182 percent from 1955 to 1973. Private sector wages averaged 8 900 in 1973 as domestic program spending climbs to 25 4 percent of GNP.
Fern Kieser dropped a money bag into a city Dumpster and, after a help call to Sanitation, Jack Gladman and crew retrieved the bag. Cleodis McNealy and Silverio Martinez assisted. The House passed an emergency one year farm bill by 259 to 162 to aid farmers facing high costs. The Senate, by 82 to 12, votes to repeal the oil depletion allowance with conditions for independents and advances a Mansfield backed substitute to speed action on a $31 billion tax plan. The package includes a $3 billion one time Social Security payment and changes to rebates and business credits, aiming for final passage as early as Friday.
Government data show February consumer prices rose six tenths of a percent, the same as January, with meat and sugar costs easing to limit the food index. Non food items and services rose sharply, while overall inflation is seen moderating further, with economists predicting continued improvement.
Six 7-Eleven food stores representing a $500 000 investment will open in Amarillo this July under Southland Corp. The announcement came at a noon Amarillo Country Club luncheon, with plans for local hiring and about 25 new jobs. Construction and site locations will be announced within two weeks as local expertise leads the project.
