In a push to share in tourist dollars many towns should appoint an aggressive leader to head a community project. Review attractions from Old West ranches to roadside motels and cafes and invite successful operators to advise. A mass meeting should map targets, educate locals, and promote a unified plan.
The Texas legislature sent a reform bill to the governor to crack down on teenage drinking. It tightens license controls, raises penalties for minors and adults aiding minors, requires fingerprints and photos on licenses, and allows license revocation for club sellers. The measure also cleans up campaign contribution rules related to liquor license holders.
Defense Secretary Laird and David Packard told the Senate Armed Services Committee that the Soviets can now destroy most of the U S Minutemen missiles and threaten the Polaris fleet within three to four years. They urged approval of the Safeguard ABM to defend missiles and deter war while arguing it would spur arms talks.
AP reports President Nixon may apologize for calling his host a traitor lemon picker and a little H Vaughan in a bitter 1952 campaign remark. Vaughan notes limited warmth with Truman, while Nixon heads to a West Coast visit carrying a peace offering piano from the White House to Truman Library.
A swarm of earthquakes struck northwestern Mexico's Gulf of California late Thursday night. Seismologists at Caltech reported 16 tremors within 90 minutes, with four possibly damaging.
A five man crew escaped injury when 22 of 34 cars derailed about one mile west of Amarillo. The train was en route from Tucumcari and minutes from its destination when the accident occurred. Story on Page 39.
Potter County Commissioners Court will consider a resolution to fund a new all purpose stock barn at the Tri-State Fairgrounds with costs over 200000. The plan by the Tri-State Fair Association calls for a 270 by 240 foot, 1500 to 2000 seat barn, to be completed by September, with county share limited to one third up to 100000 and 25,000 due this year.
The New York market closed higher with the Dow up 8.02 at 920.13 marking the third consecutive gain after a small loss to start the week. The index rose 3.35 on Tuesday and 4.73 on Wednesday.
A federal grand jury indicted sixteen people in Chicago on violence during the Democratic National Convention. Eight police officers and eight demonstrators face charges, with a NBC employee also charged for concealing a microphone at a platform committee meeting. Twelve others named as coconspirators but not defendants.
Sen John Tower voiced deep concern over the clash between the International Longshoremen's Association and the West Gulf Maritime Association but stated they had not yet achieved a settlement. Press aides indicated Yarborough would not comment while chairing the Senate Labor and Public Welfare Committee and may open hearings if held. Rep Bob Price urged federal mediation to stop the strike’s damage.
The Texas Highway Department led an open hearing Thursday on the proposed Loop 335 from I 40 east of Amarillo to US 87 and 287 north. The corridor is part of the Urban Transportation Plan 1964 1985 and favors traffic from outside the city as planners map a complete loop from Canyon Drive to South Washington.
