Gun Battle Ends Tragic Farmyard Shootout Near Slaton

Slaton area deputies battled Chester Tatum a 55 year old Negro who barricaded in a two room rock house for two hours after fatally wounding his employer J O Roberts 75 on a farm 15 miles south of Slaton. Tatum died in the exchange and Officer Eugene Martin suffered powder burns as tear gas and gunfire filled the siege. Roberts was rushed to West Texas Hospital in Lubbock in critical condition.

Probe invited no price fix on the range

Fred H Dressler president of the American National Cattlemen's Association urged a Kennedy administration probe into price fixing while addressing the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association convention. He said any such fixing would not occur at the ranch level and backed a broad inquiry into meat milk and drugs. Norman Moser questioned the existence of significant price fixing.

Boys Rescued After Two Hour Refrigerator Ordeal

In Rockford Illinois two brothers Teddy five and Timothy were found alive after being locked inside a basement meat storage refrigerator for two hours. Their father Dale Oliver alerted police and after a second search noises from the unit led to their release. Teddy is credited with helping both escape.

Plains Highway Bids Announced in Texas Bid Openings

Amarillo firm Gilvin Terrill Inc. topped three of five highway projects bid in Austin by the State Highway Department. Low bidders for two others were Ivan Dement of Amarillo and E D Baker of Berger. Projects include U S 87 287 extension, Taylor Street overpass, and a Farm to Market Road 1321 gap in Gray County.

Two Youths Rescued From 50 Foot Glacier Crevasse

In Juneau Alaska on March 20 two 19 year olds Roger Morris and Gale Good were rescued from a 50 foot crevasse on Mendenhall Glacier after an all night exposure. Rescue workers from Juneau Rescue Council using ropes lowered to the bottom pulled Morris Good and companion Jerry Dove to safety through driving rain. They were hospitalized at St Ann's with exposure and injuries including cuts.
