Leon Ray Hays 28 of 94 N Polk surrendered to Desk Set at 11 05 p m after breaking from Amarillo city jail by removing a screen and climbing to the roof. He told Lt Storey I only wanted to see what you would do then played snooker until arrest. This marked Amarillo’s second jail break in history.
FBI linked a murder victim to 37 burglaries in Amarillo since Christmas Eve with 18 break-ins last weekend. Suspect Hays confessed to participating and fled after interrogation by Detectives Leslar and Arterburn.

The body of 30 year old Robert Boyd Chapman was found near a roadside park south of Canyon. FBI identified Chapman of East Lansing Michigan by fingerprints. He had lived in Phoenix where he ran a service station and was en route to Michigan when killed. Authorities suspect robbery and hitchhiking as possible factors. Wayne County Sheriff L 8 Slim Johnston noted Chapman was a Navy veteran and former boxer.
Senators Douglas and Daniel clash during a heated discussion on a proposed constitutional amendment to change the electoral college system. Daniel backs a proportional or district based method, while Douglas warns it favors rural one party states over urban voters in presidential elections.
