Basketball action at Hutchinson Kansas has Connors State 64 over Grays Harbor 51, Moberly Mo 67 over Campbellsville Ky 65, Wharton Texas 74 over Joliet 62, LaGrange Missouri 65 over Dodge City 63, and Plains Chevrolet 42 over Air Base in a championship.
Boston pounded four Washington pitchers for 21 hits in a 14-8 spring win. Eleven Red Sox hitters crossed the plate as the game stayed tight until a big ninth inning.
Dory Funk defeats Danny McShain in a non title bout at the Sports Arena to capture two straight falls after a 54 minute struggle. McShain, bloodied and hobbling, failed to answer the final bell as Funk finished him with a spinner after a knee injury. Morelli vs Curtis ended in a 45 minute draw. Lometa Odom, star from Dimmitt High School, joins Dowell's Dolls West Texas AAU women’s champions for the national AAU tournament in Wichita Kansas next week. The roster adds Joyce Davis from Dalhart Edith Davie Yvonne Avery Frankie Schuelke Rosie Hart Wynell Gill and others plus Dowell's guard Juanita Smotherman. Regular Dolls members unable to travel due to work leave are not specified. Hutcherson Flying Queens from Wayland College also compete in Wichita.
Amos Alonzo Stagg, 88, dean of football coaches, will be honored at a grand reunion luncheon in Stockton on May 17 by players he coached at the College of the Pacific from 1933 through 1946. Only about 10 percent of all American women fail to marry.
Amarillo High School golfers name Jimmy Russell John Farquhar Rex Baxter Jr and Bobby Sanders to the 36 hole medal play at Brownwood Country Club for the Bluebonnet Relays. Russell led the 72 hole test at Amarillo Country Club with 301 while Farquhar Bax ter and Sanders posted 806 311 and 319. The team tied Sunset of Dallas for first in the Southwestern Exposition Meet at Fort Worth last Friday. Ben Burkett Jr dropped from the lineup as Sanders claimed the spot. The linksters head to Brownwood this morning for a practice round.
The Amarillo Municipal Golfers Association announced the annual municipal tour starts May 3 at the Ross Rogers Course. It runs May 3 to 18 with the city tournament also at Muny, and another event June 14 to 29. Qualifying spans one week per event and match play occurs over two weekends.
Phillips 66ers led by Bob Kurland defeated Artesia 70 to 52 in the AAU quarterfinals, earning a spot in the Olympic playoffs later this month in New York and Kansas City. Artesia’s Bill Johnson scored 13 of 18 first-half points for the Travelers before Phillips pulled away.
Hutchinson Kan March 20 Wharton Texas and Hannibal Mo LaGrange JC win to reach semifinals of the national junior college basketball tournament. Hannibal beats Dodge City 65 63 while Wharton tops Joliet 74 62. Hibbing Minn and Branch Utah also advance.
Five junior high squads Berger Phillips Sam Houston Horace Mann and Nixson will compete in a 3 pm invitational at Amarillo Stadium. Lee Williamson serves as clerk. No admission will be charged.
Amarillo High School track faced a setback as star miler Stuart Dowlen was ruled ineligible for the current season under section 16 for missing a semester. Dowlen and baseball co captain Mark Gunnels both barred, replacing Dowlen with David Lawrence and Terry Northcutt in the mile. Coach Frank Guess leads 14 athletes to Brownwood with 15 others joining later for Big Spring Relays.
Oilman Glenn McCarthy announced the Shamrock Charity Bowl between the Dallas Texans and Chicago Cardinals will be held in Houston in September. The exact date September 20 or 21 is to be decided and Rice Institute has not approved a venue yet. If played at Owl Stadium capacity may be limited by a 70,000 seat Rice facility versus a public stadium with about 20,000 seats.
Cincinnati offered to trade pitcher Ewell Blackwell to Brooklyn for a package including outfielder Andy Pafko Rocky Bridges and a young pitcher likely John Rutherford who pitched five scoreless innings in an exhibition. Brooklyn leaders said they would consider the proposal after listening to Reds manager Gabriel Paul. John Adams died at 90 after a long presidential career.
