London and Paris weigh a planned approach to eastern Europe to deter Germany. Halifax and Daladier weigh drawing a line in the east while Poland and Romania hold key influence amid fears of a broader war.
Secretary Wallace said aides would seek an opinion from Attorney General Frank Murphy on whether passing a Texas county road bond assumption bill would curtail federal highway aid. Protests from Texas highway groups followed a previous statement by Agriculture Department solicitor Mastin White. The measure, backed by the Texas County Judges and Commissioners Association, raises whether surplus gasoline tax funds used to retire bonds would violate Hayden Cartwright, potentially cutting federal aid by about four million dollars.
Washington March 20 William O Douglas chairman of the securities commission was nominated for the supreme court by President Roosevelt. At just over forty he would be the youngest justice since 1812 if confirmed. Western senators approved, Borah led the western drive, Douglas comes from Yale Law and will replace Brandeis.
Amarillo police and sheriff's officers plus rangers and highway patrols scour the Panhandle for Thomas Lee Compton, 26, suspected in the Saturday night attack on 13 year old LaUna Marie Blades. A hijacked cab linked to Compton and a blood smeared billfold tied to Jessie Muriel Turner, also 13, were found. Compton has prior convictions and was indicted in nearby Pampa for attempted criminal attack in 1936.
Paris March 20 the Dala dier government used its new dictatorial powers to raise army officers and non commissioned officers and to authorize the call up of reservists into armed service.
Bucharest reports enthusiasm over Britain sending a trade mission while Romania resists surrender of political rights. Germany seeks larger oil imports from Romania as arms supply concerns rise with Skoda assets in German hands and 500000 Romanian soldiers held at borders near Carpatho Ukraine.
London reports indicate Britain France Soviet Russia and other nations may unite against German aggression. Proposals include an international conference or a three power anti aggression declaration with broad participation.
The United States refused to recognize Hitler s coup in Czecho Slovakia in a note to Germany. Sumner Welles ordered the Prague legation closed and recalled Wilbur Carr. The note s contents will be published tomorrow. Plans for defense spending and aviation training were outlined as part of wartime measures.
Allen H. Willborn died at 11:20 after paralysis struck Thursday night. At 68 he founded Willborn Bros. Company in Amarillo after moving from Memphis in 1911. A Mississippian by birth, he built a life in West Texas as an industrialist, real estate developer, and stock tank maker with deep church and civic ties.
Houston March 204 Clifford B. Jones was elected president of Texas Tech of Lubbock by the board despite an injunction from District Judge H F Kirby Groesbeck. The action followed a notice of injunction from Judge Fountain Kirby Groesbeck while the Tenth Court of Civil Appeals considered over the case. Directors voting for Jones included Spencer Wells G C Thomson J M West Milburn McCarty Mark McGee and the chairman. those not voting were Tom Pollard L L Steele and Mrs W R Potter. The Waco appeal was filed by William B Brown Fort Worth attorney. Attorney General Gerald Mann was en route with a transcript but action timing uncertain.
Hungarian forces about 600000 strong are stationed along the border with Romania. Officials say most troops are in Carpatho Ukraine following Hungarys annexation of the former Czecho Slovakia territory. Additional men are to be called up in the coming days along the 250 mile frontier to Yugoslavia.
Amarillo Fat Stock Show officials began distributing 28,485.42 in checks to Panhandle Plains calf, pig, and lamb club boys for animals sold at the ninth annual fat stock show. Calf sales grossed 23,412.37. pig sales 4,301.16. lamb sales 771.91.
A 20 feet back-yard fence is offered for sale at 2105 Van Buren in a three day Want Ad. The ad cost 70 cents and invites readers to sell unused items for cash via the Want Ad Headquarters.
