A major blaze at 623 Broadway in New York trapped scores of people as flames from a third floor textile firm spread through a five story building. Fire officials said 24 died and at least 15 were injured while panic and dense smoke hindered escape.
The United States Air Force opens the first Intercontinental Guided Missile Training School at Amarillo AFB. Maj. Gen. Carl W. Brandt will inaugurate in Hangar 7000 with base commander Gen. William N. Lee presiding. About 200 trainees and 30 Northrop instructors will guide new missile instructors who will serve nationwide.
Downtown Amarillo merchants host a five hour spring open house on Polk Street with a Queen of Spring Fashion contest. Festivities include free bus service 6 to 9 pm, blocked Polk Street blocks, telecast segments on KGNC TV and KFDA TV, beauty queens modeling spring outfits, and window prizes for best dressed displays. Forecast is sunny with highs near 55 and cool 45 to 48 by night.
Dealers stage a street exhibition of sixty shiny 1958 automobiles across four blocks, styled like a fashion show for spring and summer. The event, timed before Easter on April 6, aims to inspire wardrobe plans as residents anticipate milder weather and a bountiful winter harvest of ground moisture.

At 6 06 p m an Amarillo Fire Department motorcycle fire at Army Tech Village caused slight damage. At 9 40 p m Amarillo Ambulance Service responded to 1402 North Ong with a stab and second degree burn condition involving a Black female student taken to Northwest Texas Hospital.
Weather readings through 3 p.m. Wednesday show Amarillo recording 67 clear or sunny days out of 78 for the year 1958. Remaining days reflect clouds or precipitations, with prospects depending on coming fronts.
A deputy tax collector at a Shamrock service station found her cash box missing after a restroom break. About $750.76 in cash and a $38.92 tax refund check were taken. the loss is insured. Detectives pursue the case.
In Borger, 84th District Court heard letters and a photo offered as evidence in the murder trial of Francis Eugene Bayles 22 charged with killing Calvin Wood 21 on Weatherly Street March 21 1957. Prosecution presented letters and receipts while defense objected. judge allowed jury to return and hear the items.
A Weather Bureau forecast for Pasay describes cloudy conditions with upcoming changes. The report notes a handwriting expert, E N Martin of the Texas Department of Public Safety, testified on letter authenticity read by Taylor before the jury.
KGNC TV colorcast presents Tic Tac Dough at 2 p.m. A Rosemary Clooney concert is listed for 9 p.m. with a 6 30 p.m. program and a 2 p.m. matinee.
Receiver James M. Williamson says Estate Life Insurance Co. can only endure with new capital from stockholders and added capital.
