Norfolk reports the Shangri La carries a fleet of radio controlled F6F Ghost Hellcats to fly through the atomic bomb cloud and bring back samples. Scientists aboard will use Geiger counters to detect radiation and guide safety by lagoon landing.
The Shangri La sails with 1 700 officers and men and 60 planes plus drones to practice launches near Bikini Atoll. Drones to be deployed 20 to 40 miles from target with aim to land at Roi Island in the Kwajalein atoll as radioactivity and turbulence may affect controls. Army Air Forces also plan similar drone instrumentation on B 17s.
Washington March 19 AP Selective Service seeks extension of the draft amid a congressional push. Hearings begin with Army heads. Senate and House committees push for a time-limited renewal, possible six months, with age changes and exemptions debated.

C J E Lowndes a leading Panhandle banker died in Baylor Hospital Dallas after weeks of illness age 85 longtime First National Bank official and Amarillo booster who arrived by sailing vessel in 1885 and spent 55 years in banking born in England migrated to the United States and settled in the Panhandle he was a charter member of the Young Men's Business and Social Club and married Louise Dean Sept 8 1891 to move to Deaf Smith County and then Amarillo this obituary notes his long service and local prominence.

Alfred G. Stanley a pioneer Amarillo citizen died in a local hospital at 75 after a long illness. He spent six decades in the Panhandle and influenced church business and civic life until retirement. He held stakes in Amarillo properties and served as secretary treasurer of Noble Brothers. He helped found Amarillo Oil Company and aided early Panhandle development.
Veterans of the 36th Texas Division plan to block Gen. Mark Clark’s promotion to major general to force a congressional probe of the Rapido River crossing in Italy. The House Military Committee rejected the division’s request for an investigation, prompting talks with Texas senators and possible further action in the Senate.
