Armour grain elevator blast devastates Chicago area
A massive explosion at the Armour grain elevator on the Calumet River near Chicago caused fire and wide damage. One man is dead, four injured, and four missing among about 150 workers who had left for the day. Windows shattered in nearby towns Hammon Whiting East Chicago. Property loss estimated up to six million dollars. The tower toppled and derailment of a freight train occurred as grain burst into flames. The blast was linked to a fire in a loading chute.
