A 36 year old Canyon man, Tommy Thresher, died in a late Tuesday fire that gutted a sixty foot mobile home behind his family's house. Fire officials said the blaze started in the center and spread rapidly. authorities planned an intensive investigation as to the cause. The body was found seated upright near a north bedroom dresser and was taken to La Grone Funeral Chapel for pending arrangements.
A large fire of undetermined origin swept the Kennedy Paint and Supply Co Inc at 1513 Tyler in Amarillo just before midnight Tuesday. Firefighters battled dense smoke and exploding paint cans as flames consumed the building, leaving it a total loss. Police and Civil Defense closed nearby streets, and 25 to 30 firemen fought the blaze into the night with units remaining for cleanup and to prevent rekindling. Paul F Kennedy, president of the firm, could not comment immediately.
Governor Preston Smith will present his latest tax suggestions to the legislature at 2 p.m. today after a scheduling change to accommodate Lt. Gov. Ben Barnes. He has proposed a $320 million revenue package including $148.8 million in new taxes and must propose at least $70 million more.
A House bill to create the Texas State Technical Institute and empower it to acquire property for vocational training at Amarillo area sites survived amendments and moved to final passage. Sponsor Rep. Bob Salter led the measure through engrossment with an 85 to 66 vote as supporters press for a routine floor action. The proposal shifts James Connally Technical Institute from Texas A&M to a governor appointed nine member board with authority to locate new schools in Potter and Cameron counties and mandates oversight by the Texas Vocational Education Agency to avoid duplication with state junior colleges.
Panhandle agricultural leaders convene at 10 30 a m in Houston to break a 88 day Gulf Coast shipping strike deadlock. If unresolved before harvest the blockade could cost the High Plains over 300 million in cotton and grain exports. George Jones of Amarillo says regional farm groups from Texas Kansas and Oklahoma will attend along with Thomas Gleason of the IL union.
Amarillo College Regents accept a 1.5 million library project from contractors. The building will be the Learning Resources Center pending final architect certification. The board also backs a proposed fine arts center and asks for early cost estimates for phase one.
An explosion followed by a flash fire damaged a garage behind an unoccupied house at 1713 Marrs. Two Amarillo Fire Department units responded about 1 15 a m and brought the blaze under control in 30 minutes. Damages are estimated at $1000, with the rear house section smoke damaged. the garage was destroyed. The property is owned by Ault Co Realtors.
British paratroopers prepared for possible invasion as 315 Red Devil troops boarded warships at St Johns Antigua. Demonstrators protesting use of Antigua soil and harbor gathered at dockside as a Royal Navy force awaited orders from Prime Minister Harold Wilson and Foreign Secretary Michael Stewart, who called the buildup precautionary.
