NBC's Irving R. Levine reports Bob Hope charms Moscow's English speaking community. At a party in the American Club Hope jokes about elections and cinema as he prepares a TV program to air on NBC on April 5.
Dist. Judge W T McDonald ruled two Bryan women, Lena Bristol and Barbara Tittle, must be admitted to Texas A&M College, saying the board of directors abused power and violated the 14th Amendment. The college plans to appeal as officials contend admission decisions rest with state bodies.
In 1960s style column notes growth in Spearman and Panhandle, jokes about draft spelling, highway trash cans sprouting along Route 60, and a radio man in Gallup lamenting the slow return of new ads and American industry slipping. A Western Sea Frontier spokesman described an underwater contact with an unidentified object off the northern California coast. Navy and frontier officials withheld details on the object’s nature while 11 destroyers joined a fruitless search near Bodega Bay.
State Insurance liquidator James M. Williamson told Estate Life officers and stockholders that there is still hope for rehabilitating the Amarillo firm. He said six assistants arrived as court-appointed temporary receivers to take over assets and prepare a current report, while stressing the aim to save the company if possible. Williamson urged good faith and invited suggestions, saying he has an open mind and is for them.
Williamson stressed continued efforts under a court order to stabilize Estate Life. One path is negotiating a loan with Lincoln National Life Insurance Co. Another possible step is filing a suit on Estate Life’s behalf to cancel a 112 million dollar reinsurance agreement with Physicians Life and Accident Co of Dallas. Attorney Col E A Simpson outlined the process. Williamson had said policyholders would be protected during the receivership.
Abilene Texas the administrator of the nations oil import program said a drastic cutback in oil imports could not cure the petroleum industry. Navy Captain Matthew V Carson Jr said the President's cabinet committee felt the present import level does not threaten national security and that a further reduction might be possible given falling domestic production.

Aggressiveness in collecting delinquent city school taxes boosted early fiscal year revenues. The school tax department posted $849,660 more by Feb 28 than a year earlier, while overall current roll collections reached $6,810,922 versus $6,108,318 in 1957. Delinquent tax receipts rose from $89,227 to $136,227, aided by 1956 construction adding to the tax base.
The Panhandle Science Fair opens at noon Friday at the Tri-State Fairgrounds in Amarillo with more than 4000 area students expected. Pat O Keefe of Amarillo College directs the event, reporting 676 exhibits from 16 Panhandle cities. Overflow moved from the Commercial Exhibits Building to Fair Park Coliseum. Intermediate division exhibits for grades 4 to will be shown in the Coliseum.
Mrs. Ethel Smith of 706 Harrison reports an unfurnished four room house rented through the Amarillo Daily News and Globe Times classified ad department. She says the rental occurred much quicker than expected.
Seventeen models from West Texas State College Perryton Groom Amarillo and Wellington compete in a downtown fashion show Thursday evening. A Queen of Spring Fashion will be crowned at the Paramount Theater with prizes of 50 and 30 and 20 dollars for best dressed store windows. An automobile show on Polk Street plus free City Bus service and KGNC TV telecast accompany the event as spring arrives at 9 06 p m.
Vanguard satellite chief John P. Hagen said the United States could walk out to the moon with a rocket. Defense sources said the Pentagon would soon announce which moon rocket project would be attempted as Vanguard I circles Earth every 135 minutes. President Eisenhower planned a White House bipartisan space conference with invited lawmakers. Senator Knowland said space committee leaders would be included once a date is set. Hagen noted Vanguard I’s Monday launch shows upper stages of three stage rockets could be added to any powerful system.
A Navy spokesman notes Hagen’s belief in a powerful booster while Vanguard predicts a satellite could reach a Moon orbit within a year or $9. The Air Force riffs on a Thor based Moon strike with Vanguard tech. the Army mentions Ce C for Explorer I. Multiple moon rocket concepts are under review.
Amarillo Chamber of Commerce Roundup Club declares business is good and plans to counter recession chatter. Members point to rising construction and retail sales in Amarillo and the surrounding area and will distribute buttons downtown asserting that business is good.
