Editor's note begins a Q A series outlining the Amarillo Expressway proposal. It defines expressway concepts including access controls grade separations and dispersal streets and discusses property acquisition methods and arbitration as path to right of way.
Amarillo voters will decide a bond package totaling about 2.5 million dollars for an expressway from Canyon through Amarillo to near Pleasant Valley plus 850000 for city improvements. The State Highway Commission will fund the expressway along the present Highway 87 route with added drainage and storm sewers.
In Waco on March 18 a federal court sentenced Alph Broussard of Lafayette Louisiana to five years and a $10000 fine for conspiring to smuggle 69 Charolais cattle from Mexico into the United States. William Babb of Del Rio was given a three year term and a $5000 fine with a 90 day grace period to pay. failure to pay could add two more years. The Charolais herd was valued at over half a million dollars and the men planed the smuggling scheme together.
General Nathan Twining announced the United States has sufficient air and atomic power to handle small wars and a major Soviet threat simultaneously. He told the Los Angeles World Affairs Council that allies are assured and enemies warned that air power may be used beyond previous aggression. The speech framed the “new look” as planning for two to three years and noted a shift toward higher performance over sheer numbers. He also suggested a reduced willingness to commit large numbers of American ground troops in local actions against Communist manpower.
President Eisenhower and Gen. Douglas MacArthur held a frank discussion on world military affairs including Indochina. MacArthur, Remington Rand Inc. chairman, described the talk as a general discussion between two old friends with no special significance.
George B. Cooper, senior city fire department member and No. 8 station captain in San Jacinto, died yesterday at Cain Clinic after illness. Born in Roberts County 58 years ago, he moved to Amarillo in 1920 and began firefighting, marking 34 years of service March 1. Survivors include his wife Maud and three sisters. Funeral arrangements by N. S. Griggs and Sons.
The report notes Amarillo had 72 clear or sunny days in 77 so far in 1954. Readings at 3 PM show Houston windy at 23 mph with cloudy skies and Dallas at minus two with mostly cloudy conditions. Oklahoma City reported 32 mph with dusty conditions and Amarillo at 42% humidity with dusty air.
Legislation setting a minimum price on natural gas to curb waste will be ready for introduction in the Texas House Monday. Rep. Guy Hazlett and Rep. Sam Wohlford, aided by Rep. Patten and others, outline multiple revenue routes to fund a teacher pay raise and state employee increases.
The House passed a broad tax revision by a 339 to 80 margin after a 210 to 204 roll call on the income tax cut. President Eisenhower argued for the plan on radio and TV as Democrats pressed a larger exemption increase. Voters inside and outside the chamber watched party lines shape the outcome with 193 Democrats, 10 Republicans and 1 independent for the tax cut and 201 Republicans and 9 Democrats opposed.
Clio Alabama mayor says missing banker Royal Reynolds arrived with his bank records but without clear proof of funds. Reynolds wife explains the episode as a misunderstanding as residents gather to discuss the town’s economic setback and repatriation. He faces state embezzlement charges and posted bond before returning home.
Amarillo announces Mrs. O O L Johnson a civic worker and PTA volunteer will run for the school board. She highlights educational welfare and a mother’s perspective, with long local service and family ties in Amarillo. Other candidates include M. T. Johnson Jr and Ben Stone. terms of R. A. Wilson and W. N. Durham Jr. expire. The election is April 3 with filing deadline March 23. Dr J H McCracken, 86, longtime Mineral Wells physician and former Texas State Medical Assn head, died aged 86.
Gov. Shivers vowed renewed cleanup in Duval County as a Senate fight brewed over appointing a successor to ousted 79th District Judge Woodrow Laughlin. Parr, longtime Duval boss, faces accusations of stirring conflict while Atty. Gen. Shepperd hints at new legal actions and investigations into public funds.
