Engineers say the central span of the Ludendorff Bridge at Remagen collapsed on a Saturday. despite heavy losses among the 200 engineers working under shellfire, officials report the gap can be repaired and the bridge usable soon. The collapse followed prewar damage to a lower arch girder from a German demolition charge.
U S Pacific Fleet reports hundreds of American carrier planes struck Kyushu targets in a prolonged three month assault on the Japanese homeland. Tokyo radio claimed raids also reached Shikoku and southern Honshu as Nimitz warned of a strong air fleet engaging enemy interceptors.
Paris papers publish unconfirmed dispatches claiming German Marshal von Rundstedt proposed an armistice with Allied terms for German occupation up to the Russian front. L'Humanite accuses German leaders of pressuring for peace to preserve the regime and its war aims.
London reports Soviet shock troops capture Kolberg after a 13 day siege. Stalin announces liquidation of German resistance in the port with Zhukov’s First White Russian Army and Polish units completing the citadel take. East Prussia fronts see heavy advances with 40 towns taken.
