Telegraphic reports say the country watches Amarillo's Victory Bond drive to sustain war funding. The goal is 250000 this week plus a 12500 daily quota. the drive continues for two days as schools clubs churches and individuals pledge bonds.
The Victory Parade in Amarillo Friday at 5 PM draws praise from Texas officials and the US Treasury for a possible national film release to promote war bonds. Thousands expected to participate including Red Cross volunteers, bicycle units, and multiple city groups with a mass turnout urged.
HEDLEY March 18 Special Three men were seriously injured when a Fort Worth & Denver freight train wrecked two miles east of Lelia Lake. Harold Martin of Peoria Illinois James Christie of Houston and a Dallas man named Dine were treated at Clarendon hospital. Eighteen freight cars piled on the right of way. the locomotive and first two cars did not wreck. A broken wheel caused the wreck.
Police in Sao Paulo announce a new roundup of Japanese nationals revealing a state of readiness for orders from Tokyo. Ten detainees admitted meeting nightly to listen to Tokyo radio and awaiting radioed instructions on colony conduct. Earlier, four Japanese fifth column leaders were seized in the state last Sunday.
British forward troops clash with a strong Japanese force pushing north toward Toungoo in Central Burma. troops pull back from the east wing while General Alexander braces to marshal air and armored strength for a major engagement. Japanese forces also push toward Prome and Taikkyi as reinforcements arrive.
SAN FRANCISCO March 18 Francis B Sayre A S High Commissioner to the Philippines returned to the United States insisting the United Nations can win the war only by aggressive and furious attack He said giant planning and outlays of money alone will not win the war and urged matching the gallantry of American troops on Bataan He will report to President Roosevelt and then return to the Southwest Pacific The war can never be won by plans or money alone but by forceful action. Also Cairo dispatch says German columns south of Timimi in the Libyan desert withdrew and enemy activity was reduced yesterday.
