The Texas Highway Department rejected a proposed alternate route for Amarillo Expressway naming 36th Avenue and Fillmore Street as the preferred path. Officials said the original routing is correct based on traffic origin and destination studies. City plans to meet today at Art Jordan’s home to act on the department offer to build the expressway. Jordan is recovering from spinal surgery and cannot attend the municipal auditorium meeting.
President Eisenhower voiced confidence in Secretary of the Army Stevens amid the Stevens McCarthy firestorm. He urged an end to petty quarrels and unwise investigators while affirming Stevens integrity and honor. He warned against fear and name calling, urging focus on national good. The White House broadcast the admonition at a morning press conference.

Rival longshoremen clash along the strikebound New York waterfront. Pickets from the International Longshoremen's Association battle non-striking AFL dockers in Newark and New York, with several injuries and nine arrests. Police guard 350 miles of piers as shippers urge an end to the 13 day strike.
The Texas Senate Education Committee approved a bill to raise the minimum teacher salary by 402 a year without opposition. Sponsors noted the measure only guarantees the minimum boost, leaving higher pay in the hands of individual school boards. Critics urged explicit disclosure of who will receive the full increase, as many teachers in higher paying districts may not get the raise.
A historic Supreme Court order removes Woodrow Laughlin from the 79th District Court in George Parr’s South Texas dominion. The ruling cites improper discharge of a Jim Wells County grand jury to protect his brother, justifying removal. Gov. Shivers will appoint the vacancy, Senate confirmation required. An appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court is expected.
