The federal crop reporting board projected 1939 wheat acreage at 65,678,000 and corn at 92,062,000 acres, against AAA goals of 55,000,000 and 96,000,000. It notes plantings may shift with weather, prices, labor, finances, and conservation programs, affecting final yields.
A second federal grand jury in New Mexico indicted 11 people including Las Cruces Mayor Samuel Klein on charges of diverting WPA materials and services. Bond was set at 1000 dollars for appearance. Klein claimed the city received a favorable deal for a WPA sidewalk project and adjacent property exchange.
In a bold diplomatic stance the state department denounces Hitler's Czech coup as wanton lawlessness while Senator Pittman urges swift preparations for potential U S defense actions. Sumner Welles states such acts threaten world peace and the democratic order amid calls to loosen neutrality rules. Roosevelt approves the stance as Welles cites the need for greater freedom of action under changing European events.

In Birmingham on March 17 Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain denounces Hitler as a lawless aggressor and vows Britain would fight to resist domination of Europe. He says appeasement after Munich was betrayed and declares he would sacrifice for peace but will act to defend Britain.
Paris reports Premier Daladier asked parliament for almost unlimited dictatorial powers to act rapidly in response to Germany's expansion. He refused to specify plans beyond military measures and did not limit scope to any field. Chamberlain condemned Germany's invasion of Czecho Slovakia and warned of further consequences. He pledged British and empire support to resist domination by force.
The Post Office Department announced acting postmasters for several locations including Hereford Texas where Mrs. Cecil C Aliams will serve as postmaster as of March 17 marked in the release.
Berlin reports Hitler travels to Vienna after parades in Bruenn Prague and Brunn. Nazi power on display in Bohemia Moravia Slovakia as army preparations and protectorate rule unfold amid anti Allied criticism and Roosevelt references.

Riders King Kerry and George Cates trail about one day behind, with others scattered in Arizona. The field is expected to reach Blythe, California, after Davidson passed through yesterday afternoon.
