Mounted sheriff's deputies and state troopers charged about 600 civil rights demonstrators in Montgomery using ropes clubs and canes. The incident left at least 14 hurt though none seriously. A Japanese demonstrator was struck as horsemen advanced near a white frame house. Police later cleared the area for a second march on the Capitol by 1200 demonstrators with a permit.
In Tucson a 52-year-old woman and a 1-year-old youth were involved after a dispute over parking. The woman used a crutch to strike the boy, who grabbed the crutch and poked her. The youth’s sweater was ripped, he was bitten on the hand, and a finger nearly severed. Police arrived as they scuffled.
About 11 000 damage reported after a fire tore through Stone and Meredith Hardware and Casey's Bakery occupying a two story brick building. Firefighters from Plainview and nearby towns battled the blaze starting 3 40 am, with the building partially collapsing before control was achieved around 7 am. No injuries were reported.
