West German Chancellor Adenauer called on the western powers to arrange a quick plebiscite in West Berlin to show residents oppose Soviet demands for Allied troop withdrawal. He linked the move to a broader critique of Khrushchev and East Germany's persecution of churchmen and farmers, and suggested timing before the May 16 East West summit. Eisenhower signaled interest in the plan.

The Atomic Energy Commission announced plans to detonate a nuclear explosive 25 miles southeast of Carlsbad in salt formations as part of the Plowshare program. The 16 000 ton TNT blast would be deep underground, with final authorization by the President, and costs estimated at about one million dollars. Observers from Russia and other nations would be welcomed.

The U S Weather Bureau reports clear to partly cloudy skies in the Amarillo area and warmer conditions through Friday. Temperatures range from a low near 20 this morning to a high near 55 today, with similar conditions in Northwest Texas.

A Fargo price war enters its third week as one dealer promotes five gallons for 50 cents during evening hours and Moorhead stations offer regular gas at about 18.9 cents per gallon. The exact cause remains unclear with trading stamps cited by some observers.

Paralyzing snowstorms battered the Midwest and South as spring neared. Tornadoes, heavy rains and hail lashed central Florida, with states of emergency in Plant City and Dunedin after a Plant City airport flood damage. One death was reported.
Three Chicago business wives were found beaten to death in a Starved Rock cave. Victims included Mrs Frances Murphy, Mrs Mildred Lindquist, and Mrs Lillian Oetting, all linked to major firms Borg Warner, Harris Trust, and Illinois Bell. The deaths were ruled murder. the trio were on a winter holiday when attacked. A snowstorm delayed discovery and a correctional-crew search joined the inquiry.
Daily News Index reports police found the bodies after a chase on narrow snow slick trails. State's Atty. Harlan Warren and Illinois State Police chief William Morris suspect multiple assailants. Investigators from the Illinois Bureau of Identification in Springfield join the search near Illinois Highway 1746 overlooking the canyon.
