In a letter to the editor Canyon citizen questions civil rights about police impounding a car for unpaid parking tickets without notice. The piece argues such action may violate due process and the Fourth Amendment, urging citizens to watch for infringements and defend individual rights.
Rescue crews recovered 12 of 18 miners trapped seven days in the Holden No. 22 coal mine near Logan West Virginia at 3 45 p m E S T. Mines Director Crawford L Wilson said all men are presumed dead and survivors are unlikely as search continues for the remaining six victims. Clergy prayed as cotts were prepared for body removal.
Three people died in separate late night truck train crashes on the South Plains at Bovina and Littlefield. A 39 year old man from Ironton Missouri, H A Merkel, was killed when his unloaded semi grain truck collided with a speeding Santa Fe mail train at Bovina. J C Bales, 32, from Littlefield and his wife perished when their pickup struck a freight at a crossing west of Littlefield depot. Merkel's wreckage stretched a mile along the track. the train crew was uninjured.
Nearby ranchers report higher than usual antelope numbers as green pastures draw herds toward highways. Rep. Edgar Wilson, Porter Oakes, and Harry Hoare counted about 25 antelope grazing with cattle west of the Fritch highway, recalling childhood memories.
Partly cloudy in Amarillo and vicinity with warmer conditions this afternoon and a cooling trend tonight. Lows near 24 and highs around 55, with continued cold after Thursday. Northwest Texas also partly cloudy and colder Thursday.

It notes Alger’s victory tied to wealthy wards and hints at liberal challenger Oscar Mauzey.
The Teamsters Union repudiated a confidential political memo that allegedly targeted nine senators and 73 House members for defeat or ballot support. A union spokesman called the document dead and said it bore no approval from the union or James R. Hoffa, noting it lacked official force or effect. The New York Herald Tribune reported the purge list circulated to trusted lieutenants.
Chicago undercover postal investigators John McAuliffe and Benedretto Spizzirri were slain by three mail thieves after a stakeout at La Salle Street. Jerome Williamson mobilized 700 agents from 17 federal bureaus across Illinois Wisconsin and Michigan in the largest manhunt in Chicago history.
Roy Parks of Midland was elected AQHA president with S M Moore of Dewey Oklahoma named first vice president and Wayne Vickers of Eureka California named second vice president. Tol Ware and Howard Singer of Amarillo were re elected treasurer and secretary manager as the 1960 officers and executive committee were named.
Shamrock residents note March 17 as a special day. Local youngsters treat it as a national holiday with playful plans and community chatter.
Pre St Patrick’s Day events attract up to 40 000 visitors with Irish attire and Texas touches. Gov Price Daniel to speak at a National Guard Armory banquet. Sol Blonstein to host as Shamrock Trip speaker. Day events run from 8 a m breakfast at Dixie Cafe to 9 p m dances, with several official visits, reunions, parades and concerts.
The Santa Fe Railway began preliminary work on a large expansion in Clovis New Mexico including a new yard office control tower a west yard expansion and an overpass on Hull Street. The project aims to boost yard capacity by 300 cars daily with a five story office tower slated to start May 1 and finish January 1961. The overpass will be a joint project with the New Mexico Highway Department funded in part by a planned 40 million road budget discussed by the highway commission.
The Crossroads Report notes IRS consideration of deducting termite damage if the work is completed within a couple of years. It warns against extended, slow termite work claiming non deductibility. The column cites a neighbor worried about deadlines and jokes about a night shift termite crew.
New Jersey Board of Child Welfare abandons plan to remove the four year old gifted girl from foster parents Mr and Mrs Richard Combs of Old Bridge and allows adoption. The reversal follows international criticism after the board questioned the child intellectual and financial needs amid a day of mixed emotions for the Combs family.
Gov. Price Daniel arrived in Amarillo for a two day Panhandle speaking tour. He will address the Chamber of Commerce luncheon at the Herring Hotel at noon with tickets costing $2. Later he dedicates the Josiah Gregg Memorial Monument at Palo Duro High School and speaks at an eight pm banquet in Shamrock. He will join St Patrick's Day activities there and stay overnight.
Will Harrison reports from Santa Fe for The Daily News on page 14 that the Hobbs Democratic group may back State Senator Lusk in a challenge to U S Rep Joe Montoya, a development impacting the Governor Burroughs race as the situation unfolds.
