Location Committee members for the Cowboy Hall of Fame toured pastures around Canyon as one of ten cities under study for the national Shrine site during a full afternoon visit on the Palo Duro banks.
Chairman Ray Schnell of Dickinson and four members of the committee toured the Panhandle Plains Historical Society Museum and Palo Duro Canyon meeting in Amarillo. Participants included A M G Swenson Fred H Dressler J Evetts Haley and Albert Mitchell with Mayor S T Curtis observing. They also viewed the T Anchor log cabin headquarters and the historic site in a guided inspection.
The Canyon location committee visited Tradewind Airport and Panhandle sites with four of five members arriving by Beechcraft. Members included Ray Schnell and A. M. G. Swenson, while Fred Lewis remained hospitalized with flu. J. Evetts Haley led the welcome as the group toured the Panhandle Plains area and West Texas State College.
A cold front eased in bringing cooler, breezy conditions but little dramatic change. Temperatures after a 64 high and 27 low forecast for today follow a 59/34 day yesterday as forecasters expect a modest cool-down over the next few days.
A Floydada man, Gerald Arnold Snodgrass, 48, was shot and critically wounded at his mother's home. His sister Bertha Savage, 55, of 2502 Harrison, was charged with assault with intent to murder after claiming self defense. Snodgrass remained in serious condition at St. Anthony's Hospital.
Snodgrass was shot three times with a .32 caliber pistol at the home of Mrs Hattie Snodgrass on West 13th Street. Mrs Kathlene Hill and Mrs Savage lived there. Savage posted a 3500 dollar bond after arraignment. Snodgrass had been a state hospital patient years earlier. Police report by Detective Captain J L King notes arrival to Amarillo Monday.
The Senate rejected a Democratic move to cut income taxes by a million dollars yearly in a 50 to 44 vote. It then passed by voice vote a bill extending current corporate and major excise tax rates for one year from April 1. The House had approved the extension but with a provision for a $20 per taxpayer cut and $10 per dependent, mostly aiding families under $5,000 income. The White House praised the Senate action as House leaders weigh a conference, with Eisenhower pleased.
After the AEC released a uranium survey map at the Amarillo Post Office Panhandle landowners and prospectors pressed for details. H D Wolf of the Albuquerque sub-office said only the mapped area was checked by airborne scintillation equipment and weather prevented broader coverage. other similar geological areas could still contain anomalies.
The Amarillo crowd of 600 to 900 enjoyed a free municipal ballet program featuring Sonia Castaneda and Jorge Cano. Presented by the park and recreation department to gauge popular offerings, the show also included Gene Gallo's students and local dancers Nanette Hills Bill Leighton and Beverly Hills.
Austin March 15 The State Parks Board chair man Frank Quinn said Palo Duro uranium is not for lease for the time being. The board will not lease minerals until more is known about the canyon. Requests to lease uranium rights were filed by two Lubbock men and two Canyon women, but no policy exists yet and the special lease board has not met.
Air Base hospital needs paper-backed novels for reader use. Volunteers at the Red Cross office in the old library building on the courthouse grounds will collect and deliver them. The base hospital library is nearly exhausted and needs donations from the public via the 517 Taylor chapter office.
Partly cloudy Wednesday and Thursday with mild Wednesday and warmer Thursday. Lows around 27 Tuesday night and highs near 64 Thursday. In West Texas the Panhandle remains partly cloudy with little temperature change Wednesday, warmer Thursday, and cooler conditions elsewhere Wednesday.
Burlington Lines freight and passenger agents will tour Amarillo's industrial section today. Agents from Colorado, California, Oregon, Washington, Idaho and Texas study railroad and industrial development in Texas. The party will visit Plainview, Lubbock, Childress, Fort Worth and Galveston.
