General Juan Almazan and two federal armies moved toward Torreon from the rear in a limited advance. Rebels reported a victory and captured 280 soldiers in brush near Saltillo and Monterey as fighting remained sporadic with weak resistance at the front.
Douglas Arizona March 14 R L Andrews and A J Boudreauy freed by customs after questioning over distribution yesterday of federalist literature along the Agua Prieta border. Plane used Douglas airport but not released. Reports from Mexican officials describe rebel activity around Torreon and movements toward Chihuahua City as troops near the saucer shaped Torreon area. Rebel cavalry claimed success at Ojo Caliente ranch near Higueras. Tulsa planes en route to Brownsville for Mexican forces. Nogales dispatch notes continued coverage.
Friday expected fair weather in Amarillo and West Texas with generally fair conditions for New Mexico. A trough of low pressure extends from southern Texas to the Lake region, with a higher pressure center over western Montana and colder air over Colorado.
Major H O D Segrave predicts nine to one against finishing the tests alive if near the White record as he and J M White prepare on Daytona Beach. Segrave’s Golden Arrow reaches 231 mph without incident while White’s Triplex crashes killing driver Lee Bible and a Pathe cameraman at 202 mph.
Col. Charles A. Lindbergh lands at Brownsville Texas with 13 aboard after visiting Anne Morrow in Cuernavaca Mexico en route to resume air route mapping. Stopovers included Tampico for refueling and a flight from Mexico City. Four Mexican air service pilots accompany, delivering four U.S. built war planes. Lindbergh hosted at Fort Brown by Col. W. C. Johnston.
R. E. L. Maxey filed in chancery court a suit to stop the Arkansas attorney general from enforcing the anti evolution law. The complaint cites 384 clauses and argues violations of both state and federal constitutions. Maxey said he is an Arkansan currently residing temporarily in New York.
Maj H O D Segrave, British racing star who set a world speed record of 231.36 mph, announces retirement from automobile racing. He plans to return to England after the Biscayne Bay regatta, devote himself to cement business, and pursue power boat racing as a hobby. His Golden Arrow will go to New York for exhibition before moving to a museum in England.
Memphis March 14 Special to The News Governor Dan Moody will seek a seat in the state legislature when his term ends. Representative C Land cites the statement and Moody confirms he intends to run to influence laws deemed necessary for the state’s good.
Adam Bazan, once sentenced to death, was reassessed and given 15 years on a second trial for the murder of Mrs. Antonio G. Garcia. Bazan pleaded guilty and had appealed previous death penalty.
W A French state highway engineer for the Panhandle division based in Amarillo will transfer to division No 1 at Paris. A successor has been named but not publicly announced. French will leave within 60 days as soon as a replacement is in place. He joined amid East Texas calls and says he regrets the decision while noting the Panhandle has seen its greatest highway program with significant maintenance funding increases and major bridge and retopping projects.
Army air corps Captain Ira C. Eaker announces a dawn to dusk flight from Brownsville to France field with a return to Brownsville Sunday followed by a Brownsville to Washington leg on Monday. He says all preparations are complete before his 4 am Saturday hop-off for Panama.
Four Mexican federal aviators crashed their aircraft about ten miles north of Tampico while en route to Brownsville Texas to seize American built airplanes for the government effort against the revolution. The pilots F J Lord J H DeCelles Sherman Willard and Parker Cramer were not hurt. Garland Aircraft Corporation plans to send 40 planes to Mexico with at least 800 pilot applications from across the United States seeking to fly for the federals.
D. J. Hoobler convicted of murder and sentenced to death by a Wichita Falls jury for the January slaying of Arthur Pendergraft, a wealthy Oklahoma farmer. The trial included an alleged written confession the defendant denied as coerced. Hoobler claimed self defense and led investigators to the body at a deserted ranch ten miles away after a two week search. Jury deliberated about four hours and Hoobler showed no emotion as the verdict was read. Attorneys filed notice of appeal.
The Boston Herald reports Benjamin Loring Young former speaker of the Massachusetts house of representatives has been offered the post of first assistant United States attorney general by President Hoover. It is understood he will accept.
An elderly man, possibly E. J. Green, was injured in a rollover automobile accident near Waco on March 14. His address is unknown. A purse found at the scene listed Mrs. J. B. Edmonds of Tulsa and Mrs. Ada Green of Wichita Falls for notification.
The 41st Texas legislature ends a 66 day session and faces an extraordinary session starting April 15 to tackle highway funding for two years, penitentiary reform, public utilities, and other urgent needs. Governor Moody says he will reconvene the houses after about 40 days. The adjournment pace and last day theatrics mark a turbulent close as disputes over highway funding and auto registration fees linger.
In Nebs on March 14 two hundred Indians from the Pine Ridge reservation joined the hunt for six year old Wile lie Reeves who vanished Tuesday morning during a fierce blizzard eight miles north of town. He had gone out to find kittens and did not return. The search explores three theories including death in the storm, shelter with an Indian, or involvement of a rancher described as queer.
The Chicago Civic Opera company brings 275 people in two trains to Amarillo for Monday night Thais at the College of Music. Mary Garden Jose Mojica and Cesare Formichi lead the cast as tickets sold briskly for $7 $4 and some $10 seats amid late rush orders from out of town.
Amarillo Chief H L Gaither appointed Lee Miller to head traffic in place of the late H G Dunwoody who died in a Wednesday airplane crash. Miller has served three years in Amarillo including roles as detective patrolman motorcycle officer and prior ten months as traffic captain. He previously served with Evansville Indiana police.
Amarillo residents were reminded that twelve o'clock tonight is the final hour to file income tax returns with the collector of internal revenue. Deputy collector J. B. Lillibridge warned that midnight means exactly on the hour with delinquent penalties starting then. Offices are in Room 243, Federal Building.
Governor Bibb Graves urged swift aid for Elba Alabama as flood waters rose and residents faced drowning. National Guard units and volunteers in Enterprise worked to mount a relief effort by boat and raft, but communication remained scarce and time was critical.
Captain Ira Eaker plans a dawn to dusk flight in a Boeing pursuit plane carrying diplomatic mail from Mexico Guatemala Nicaragua and Panama. H J Adamson secretary to Trube Davison arrives to supervise the mission and the flight will be supported by Postmaster G W Denett. Adamson expects fuel stops at Puerto Mexico with Lieut J B Upson piloting.
