A rambling column riffs on Irish themes with Shamrock theater plans next Thursday and a playful bill to Bedford O Harrison in an Irish meal setting. It also skewers barbershop gags, Beulah Jo Hughes, Monday blues poems, and Old West humor from local papers and readers.
Clarence Darrow, famed defender of the under-dog and foe of capital punishment, died at his Chicago home at 12:40 PM after a long illness. The veteran lawyer, 80, had written that he fought for the unfortunates and influenced many landmark cases including those of Leopold and Loeb and Eugene V. Debs. His death ends a life of courtroom battles and staunch independence as family members gathered for funeral plans.
Ross Byron, president of the Southern Union Gas Co., announced the takeover of all properties formerly owned by Consumers Natural Gas Co and subsidiaries. New Mexico Eastern will operate as a subsidiary of Southern Union, part of simplifying the Southern Union corporate structure and eliminating sub-holding companies.
Henry Russell a 66 year old Roswell stockman and farmer shot himself at the city police station while awaiting trial for the fatal shooting of Omer E Bybee a 49 year old CCC carpenter. Russell had been held for trial March 18 on the Bybee killing and died instantly in the station restroom. He had lived in Roswell 37 years and is survived by a wife a son and a daughter.
Several hundred copies of the pictorial review of the Mother-in-Law Day parade remain at the Globe News office. Copies can be mailed anywhere for 10 cents or bought at the office for 5 cents while supply lasts. No telephone orders. Three pages show special pictures of nearly every entry in the parade.
Texas state auditor Tom C. King told Gov. Allred that about 200 independent units with overlapping duties operate without central control or standard accounting. He cited nearly 170 million dollars in annual business, poor budgeting laws, and a lack of checks after appropriations. King promised a corrective plan for the legislature, noting gradual changes are necessary.
The cotton South votes again on quotas to fix a 11 million bale crop and curb prices. Alabama’s P O Davis says cotton should serve farmers. Bankhead supports the plan after Bankhead Act setback. Last year’s crop topped 18.7 million bales as prices linger around nine cents.
Amarillo police investigated a $300 cash-register raid at Local Credit Co in the Oliver Eakle Building. Three victims aided photo-lineup efforts as suspects were not yet identified. Robbers fled after a brief, nervous raid leaving victims bound with tape and gagged with adhesive.
Waxahachie March 13 Judge Tom Ball of the Waxahachie District died here today.

T B Gallaher passenger traffic manager of the Santa Fe Railway arrived in Amarillo with Mrs Gallaher for a brief visit. They are en route from Chicago and plan to leave Monday night. They stay with their son in law and daughter Mr and Mrs Jack Golding at 1721 Monroe Street. Gallaher is a well known railway executive in the Southwest and was former Amarillo general freight and passenger agent.
Washington observers report that President Roosevelt may send Congress a message urging minimum wage and maximum hour laws. He reiterated support at a press conference but noted Congress may not act this session. He plans four messages to Congress before the session ends including a note on the world phosphate situation.
John R. Lesh age 57 died from injuries after a cubing block fell on him while servicing an oil well in Nocona. Incident occurred Thursday and was reported on March 13.
Rep. Maury Maverick of Texas warned that the administration's big navy program could draw the United States into Europe's crisis rather than defend Americans. He urged moderation, favoring coast defense guns and a stronger air corps while criticizing a perceived England wink and nod. He argued the navy expansion serves to police the world and urged focus on domestic issues.
Earl Wilson of Cowle Electric Company soloed a Taylor Cub at Municipal Airport to join Amarillo’s growing list of fliers. John Payne of Payne Flying Service instructed him after eight hours and five minutes of training.
Mrs Franklin D Roosevelt departed Phoenix for Los Angeles after a sequence of events ending with her public address on peace. She will meet the President in Warm Springs, Georgia, in March.
Associated Press report says Prime Minister Chamberlain may pledge strong support to help France preserve Czechoslovakia's freedom as Hitler consolidates gains in Austria and seeks to bring Sudeten Germans into a German commonwealth. Goering proclaims spring while warning powers against intervention.
Vienna loses political freedom as President Miklas resigns and Seyss-Inquart takes charge. Austria’s army is merged with Germany. Britain unites with France to defend Czechoslovakia, while Paris plans to revise the treaty to allow military action if Nazi aims advance. Goering predicts a large Austrian vote for absorption. The Reich declares Austria a German province.
A letter to Mussolini read to the Fascist grand council said German frontiers were fixed for France and Italy, with no mention of other neighbors. The note, discussed Saturday, continues on page 7.
Paris reports Leonardo Blum forms People’s Front ministry while France moves to revise the Franco Czechoslovak pact to authorize military action against Germany even in a Nazi attempt to redraw borders. Daladier named defense minister as troops marshal along the Maginot line and eastern frontier.
