About 500 people attended the opening and dedication of the Deaf Smith Museum in Hereford Sunday afternoon. Charles Woodburn of Amarillo was the main speaker at the ceremony.

Lake Meredith search teams scoured the water Sunday for Olen Henderson, a 59 year old Borger man reported missing after his wife and a brother in law failed to find him at home for breakfast. His auto was found in a lakeside picnic area with a hat glasses wallet and a note to his wife. Hutchinson County sheriff Hugh Anderson withheld the note's contents while noting Henderson had recent financial concerns. Sheriff's deputies park rangers and a game warden conducted the day long search.
Ronald Elvebak, 20, of Amarillo escaped injury Sunday afternoon when he leaped from his car just before it struck a Santa Fe freight train. Fire crews battled several blazes, including a downtown lounge fire, Sunday in Amarillo.

Svetlana Stalina, 42, reportedly sheltered in the Swiss Alps after arriving from Rome seeking asylum in the United States. Swiss officials kept her under tight guard to prevent use of her defection for anti Soviet propaganda and to protect Swiss Soviet relations. A 45 day visa was granted for rest, but authorities warned reporters away and kept her in a private or small hotel, with armed guards likely if pursued.
