Senator Wheeler of Montana quoted a president in opposing a broad rise in federal judges. He read from Looking Forward and warned that adding judges would worsen confusion and burden taxpayers amid judiciary crowding. Continued on Page 9, Col. 5.
Bloodhounds cornered Calderon Eliodoro, 28, near Sugarland this afternoon after he and Lucas Reyes, 22, escaped from the Blue Ridge prison farm. Reyes remained at large. Eliodoro, Blanco resident, was serving a life term for a Gillespie County killing while Reyes had a Hidalgo County burglary sentence of 12 years.
Cloudy with likely light showers in Amarillo and vicinity. West Texas mostly cloudy Saturday with showers in the eastern part. New Mexico unsettled Saturday with rain south and snow or rain north and cooler. Temperature readings show highs around the mid 70s and lows near the 30s to 40s, with dated records from 1936.
Rome reports after talks with Germany that Italy answered Britain on a Locarno renewal. The note insists any new pact must align with the 1925 Locarno spirit, recalling Belgium France Britain and Germany as signatories and condemning the Franco Soviet pact.
Police rounded up more than 30 alleged Fascist fifth column members in Madrid after claiming to break a ring planning assassinations kidnappings and sabotage. The ring leader Exuperio Munoz Gonzalez was said to operate with trusted officials and a veritable arsenal. An Italian officer named Gaetano Borusi claimed Italian forces supported Franco and were confident.
George Davis, counsel for Thomas Mooney, filed vigorous exceptions with the California State Supreme Court contesting referee Addison Shaw's findings in Mooney’s habeas corpus case. He labeled the findings improper erroneous ridiculous indefensible and based on outmoded theories of law.
U S Ambassador William E Dodd pressed the German foreign office in Berlin over hostile German press coverage following Fiorello LaGuardia's anti Hitler speech. He warned that the language was coarse and unprecedented and risked clouding German American relations.
Berlin officials say Germany defines today its position on a European Security Agreement in a note to Great Britain stressing the Franco German border integrity with England and Italy. The note reflects a positive stand in reply to Britain's Locarno note, though the document was not released.
Detroit march 12 General Motors and United Automobile Workers conferees announced a final settlement of issues behind the nationwide January strikes. Wyndham Mortimer vice president of the U A W A said the agreement, while imperfect, can be recommended for acceptance by GM locals tomorrow. A U A W A representative said union officials would sign the agreement tomorrow if ratified by delegates from GM locals here. GM officials will sign Sunday. The pact notes no uniform minimum wage due to differing plant conditions and businesses.
C. L. Dozier, 55, of La Feria Texas, died at noon in Albuquerque two hours before funeral services for his son Chester Dozier were to be held. Physicians attributed the death to a heart attack caused by the exertion of a two day drive from La Feria. Chester Dozier had died on Wednesday.
A mite of a girl weighing a little less than a pound clung to life today in an incubator at Park East Hospital. She is the daughter of Mr and Mrs Max Post of the Bronx.
George Beever Jr. 22 was killed when a Christmas tree on a gas well blew off in Pearsall. Albert Malone sustained serious injuries as the blast hurled them about 30 feet.
In Parliament David Lloyd George attacked the government for spending 1.5 billion on armaments while only 1.5 million is allotted for food production this year. He warned the food front nearly broke Britain during 1916 and recalled Germany's submarine blockade nearly forcing surrender.
Neville Chamberlain told the House of Commons that the global arms race is utter madness and Britain is working hard to build an international understanding to end it.
In Nashville Tennessee prison, guard J L Sims and condemned inmate Frank Haynie were killed during a death row escape attempt at the state penitentiary. Simms was delivering lunch when Haynie stabbed him. another guard H B Harris heard the commotion.
March 12. Willie Bonn, 21, an ice deliverer's helper, lost a leg after nearing an ice gauging saw at an ice plant in Kerrville. He was knocked to the floor by the machine and taken to a hospital for treatment.
Light rain and drizzle visited the Panhandle and South Plains last night with moisture totals around a half inch in Lubbock and smaller amounts in Dalhart Canyon Amarillo and nearby towns. Showers spread from Dalhart and Higgins to Canadian and Clovis with thunder at Canadian and no rain east of Tucumcari.
Senator Copeland of New York told the Boston Chamber of Commerce he is pessimistic about the state of the U S merchant marine and called the current situation chaotic stating prospects are at a low ebb. A small picket group greeted him but caused no disturbance and dispersed after he spoke.
Antonio Rodriguez testified that Martin Salazar was warned “get ready this is your end” before being shot by Paul Laves, a hitchhiker. Salazar halted the truck near Buda between Austin and San Marcos the night of January 21, and Laves allegedly killed Salazar and fired at Salazar’s companions as they fled.
In Conroe on March 12 the state called expert witnesses and offered more documentary evidence in the M. D. Carter trial. Carter, a former employee of the Texas Railroad Commission, faces charges connected to alleged hot oil movement from the Conroe field.
In Rankin Texas two survivors Cody Bell and Russell Bell were questioned after an early morning shooting at the Bell ranch left Mary Bell age 71 and Wiley Bell 46 dead. Russell Bell, wounded and jailed previously, faced a four year term after a court denial of a rehearing in a stock swindle case. Cody Bell was hospitalized and previously free on bond in a sheep theft case. Sheriff Bill Fowler reported officers moved on the house at daybreak and Jim Norton transported Cody to the Texan hospital.
Los Angeles report says Mrs. Helen Wills Love, convicted of murdering her husband Harry A. Love, announced she would commit death by own action through will power. She was to be sentenced for second degree murder when she collapsed in her cell, later deemed not feigning by jail physicians.
More than 3000 teachers, administrators and patrons attended the opening day of the Northwest Texas Conference for Education in Canyon at West Texas State College. Over 2000 educators were officially registered making it the largest single gathering in Canyon. Dr Carleton Washburne delivered the main evening speech on Remakers of Mankind. Dr Harold Hand spoke on Reciprocity Relationship of Guidance and Curriculum. The session included remarks by Supt Irby B Carruth and a 45 minute Amarillo Philharmonic Orchestra concert.
County commissioners and the American Legion post clash over plans to fly Peaches the mountain lion as a passenger when Rex Murphy attempts a stunt a week from Sunday near Albuquerque. City officers banned the act, but Murphy moved Peaches outside the city after a two week sit down at the former owner's home.
Fourteen year old Sherman Shields remained jailed in Chico California today despite an inquest verdict that he was justified in killing his father A A Shields age 45 at Newhart Mill Wednesday. The boy said he shot his sleeping father after the man allegedly attacked his 15 year old daughter Florence.
Logan West Virginia March 12 nine bodies lay in the Macbeth mine and nine others killed in the blast remained in a funeral home as rescue crews, exhausted from the collapse, listed victims. Two trapped men were believed behind slate and timber with no hope of survival. The town endures a second fatal mine disaster in six months after a 10 dead blast last September.
District Judge E. J. Miller denied a temporary injunction to close beer establishments in Brady finding the state did not show a sufficient basis for the injunction.
In Austin on March 12 an effort to secure an early Senate hearing for repealing the horse race betting law failed after debate. Sen Grady Woodruff of Decatur postponed the measure to next week while Sen Weaver Moore of Houston, chairing temporarily, indicated he would sustain a point of order blocking immediate consideration.
Dr. Francis E Townsend, leader of the old age pension movement, was sentenced by U S District Judge Peyton Gordon to 36 days in jail and a $100 fine for contempt of the House of Representatives The defendant said Thank you sir and his attorney announced an appeal The bond of 1506 was continued pending the appeal
In San Antonio on March 12 a jury sentenced John W. Vaughn to death for the fatal shooting of Policeman A. A. Edwards. This marked Vaughn's second trial and second death sentence.
Amarillo Chamber of Commerce president Guy C. Saunders announced a nine session business clinic and inventory to study local industrial agricultural commercial and civic assets. Herb Budke of The Amarillo Gas Company is assistant general chairman with sessions starting March 17 in the Canary Room at the Amarillo Hotel.
