In the metropolitan area thousands of homeless face water and sanitation fears after a major quake. Long Beach reports about 130 dead and 5,000 injured while 50,000 students may miss school. Relief agencies mobilize as conditions worsen.
Moscow bericht from Astrakhan on the Ipian Sea reports that about 1,000 fishermen carried out to sea on an ice floe during a heavy storm are safe. No details given. Earlier message said two airplanes searched for them and shifting winds could drive the floe back toward shore.
March 12 reports from Peiping describe a lull in clashes along the Jehol border and around Kupeikow Pass. Ho Ying-Ching announces no front reports, while Chiang Kai-Shek takes command of Chang Hsiao-Liang’s troops as Tokyo signals that further Chinese moves will decide peace or war.
Two Americans, Julian Fuchs of New York and Herman Roseman of Brooklyn, were assaulted by men in Nazi uniforms in Berlin. Fuchs was beaten by assailants demanding money, a storm troop leader intervened to alert police, and Roseman was attacked outside a department store after showing his passport. both sought help at the American consulate.

State officials in Santa Fe praised Curry County Welfare Association as the best operated of its kind in New Mexico for managing emergency employment programs. Albert Vohs, president, returned from Santa Fe after conferring on street and road improvement projects under way in the county.
A vegetable truck carrying the Ferrell family collided head on with a gravel truck on the Goliad highway west of Victoria. Harold Ferrell, 10, was killed. Parents H. B. Ferrell, 40, and his wife, 31, were injured. The Ferrells lived in Houston. Gravel truck occupants Herman Broyles and Fred Thomas were uninjured.
Eight year old Barney Saunders, son of Mr and Mrs Guy Saunders of Pampa, was crushed to death near LeFors when a cave they dug collapsed. About 1060 pounds of gravel fell on him as friends rushed for help. He died en route or at a Pampa hospital. Survived by a brother and sister. Funeral arrangements pending at Stephenson Mortuary.
March 12 Austin reports committees in both houses begin hearings on a plan to reorganize state colleges for economy. The joint committee favors consolidations into junior colleges and limiting courses in some institutions. Opposed bills include abolishing eight colleges and delaying conventions on repeal of the 18th Amendment.
A. E. Banasik reports burglars entered his residence at 2705 Fillmore Street during a two week absence, taking two pairs of trousers and a suit. Entry gained through a window, police notified.
Roosevelt outlines plan to reopen banks starting in 12 Federal Reserve cities, with full operations across 250 plus cities by Tuesday and remaining communities by Wednesday. He warns reopening does not imply different soundness, underscores need to push new currency through banks and coords with state authorities.
March 12 Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald and Foreign Secretary Sir John Simon met again with conference delegates to break the deadlock at the world disarmament talks in Geneva. Attending were Hugh Gibson and Hugh Wilson of the United States Count Rudolf Nadolny of Germany and Baron Aloisi of Italy. MacDonald said British quarters remained undaunted and aimed to push Geneva toward an early useful termination.

Minnesota’s legislature shows the door to Sheriff E W Haverland after a courthouse fire left Faribault County without a courthouse or door. Law requires posting legal notices on the courthouse door, so officials authorize using the jail door instead.
A gang carted off a one and half ton safe containing 5000 dollars from Benton State Bank east of Wichita after the national banking holiday ended. The heist occurred near Benton in Kansas and was reported on March 12.
