A Soviet Embassy spokesman in Bern claimed they only know what newspapers report while another Soviet source said they have no reason to object to the Swiss government. The remarks follow a discussion of a rival figure viewed as dominant from 1929 until death in 1953.
Gov. Connally urged Texas reforms including the strongest alcohol control bill yet while warning of population growth and urging investment in highways and education. Dalhart Chamber named H. L. Gallegly outstanding citizen and installed Dan Spencer as new president with Caylor Caddell as VP and Harlan Gaskill as treasurer.
President Johnson will fly to Guam for a Vietnam war conference with senior advisers and Saigon leaders. Vice President Humphrey announced at the Gridiron Club dinner that the talks aim for an honorable peace and discuss the struggle against aggression. White House secretary Christian confirmed the Guam meetings, lasting at least a weekend, with Rusk and McNamara joining along with Rostow and White House staff.

A Soviet appeals court reduced Buel Ray Wortham Jr.s three year labor camp sentence to a 5555 dollar fine. Wortham who had a six month stay in the USSR faced costs over 10000 dollars including loss of his car and legal fees. Citizens of North Little Rock Arkansas had petitioned for his release. He hoped to be home by next weekend after the December 21 conviction for illegal actions.
Admiral Yeager and two Waves died in a residence fire. Mrs Yeager, immobilized by paralysis, survived initial burns but later died in hospital. The Waves were Laura Jean Martin and Lora Mae Garrett, both aged in their 20s, with all three victims succumbing to smoke inhalation. Yeager, retiring soon, was slated to join Zenith Radio Corp.
Fire erupted in a rear storage area of the Silver Dollar Lounge at 713 N. Fillmore around 12:40 a.m. Officials say heavy damage occurred but no one was injured as patrons escaped outside before flames spread through the building.

FBI confirmed the body found in a pauper’s grave twelve miles east of Brownsville is Jay Frank Elsen 32, OU official missing since January 17. Autopsy found two bullets in the spine and death ruled murder. Evidence included Elsen’s initials on clothing, a dental match, and forged credit card signatures linked to purchases in Arizona California and Canada.
