A weather story describes yesterday's system as a land hurricane driven by a low pressure area. The wind affected seven states with a cold front bringing a chance of snow flurries and a dust snow mix called snust.
In Congressional Record Feb 16, Herbert C. Bonner cites 1949 Republican warnings from Usher Burdick George Malone and Homer Capehart about looming depression. They warned of rising unemployment, weakened national security, and a shrinking national income for 1950 compared with 1949.

A powerful dust storm roared from Amarillo to Phoenix with winds up to 95 mph in Carlsbad. Gusts grounded an exhibition game in Phoenix and reduced visibility to 14 miles. A cold front was moving in, promising light snow flurries today while winds and dust linger.
The Atomic Energy Commission said 264 people, including 28 Americans, were unexpectedly exposed to radioactivity during recent Marshall Islands tests. None suffered burns and all were reported well after transfer to Kwajalein Island for observation. The tests on Eniwetok Bikini grounds were planned to occur between March 15 and 28, possibly a hydrogen device from an aircraft.
The Daily News reports 940 entries in a Rainy Day contest with four pessimists predicting no rain in 24 hours until summer. Optimists total 694 expect rain this month, 175 for April, and 67 for May. The four pessimists split with three favoring June and one for July.
Amarillo hosts an all day session for 3000 teachers from the Northwest Texas Conference for Education under District 9 of the Texas State Teachers Association. Opening at 9 AM in Municipal Auditorium presided by J H Flathers with speakers including Dr Arthur Corey and Dr W Norwood Brigance. Roy Cohn, chief counsel for the McCarthy investigations, told an Army report that Army Secretary Stevens would be “through” and the Army wrecked if G David Schine, a committee consultant, were sent overseas. Schine, son of a wealthy hotel family, had been the subcommittee staffer before he was drafted last year.
The Army report cites Sen. McCarthy attempting to secure a post for Schine in New York and accuses Cohn of pressuring the Army for special treatment. It notes Adams denying favoritism and says McCarthy urged getting both sides. The diary like document ends with plans for a New York hearing and mentions Zwicker and G-2 officers.
Rep Morris Cobb withdraws from the Potter County judge race leaving the post open. Incumbent Gene Jordan isn’t seeking re election and Judge Jordan has announced for the 47th District Court. Cobb said he will not seek any public office after returning to Austin for a Texas Legislature session.
The New York market rose modestly and hit a 24 year high as railroads and steel shares led gains. The Associated Press average for 60 stocks climbed to 116.40 at the close, the highest since June 4 1930, after opening near 116.30.
The clipping records that Amarillo had shone for 66 of 70 days in 1954 with a 3 PM reading showing mostly cloudy to obscured conditions. Dallas and Houston reports list varied cloudiness and visibility, reflecting a period of unsettled weather.
Three workers at the Shamrock Oil and Gas McKee Refinery near Dumas were overcome by hydrogen sulfide while repairing an acidizing line. Duel Smith and Oran E. Shelby were revived at the plant and R. N. Kimbley was removed to Dumas Memorial Hospital, with all expected to recover.
