Two men face theft charges after an $1800 diamond ring and $20 in cash were taken from the body of C. B. Lively in a crash near Kress. Robert Koontz and John J. Wilson allegedly removed the items, burned papers, and divided the cash. Koontz was in El Paso pawn shop custody, Wilson confessed, and both men were later arrested in Amarillo and Tulsa.

L. V. Haney, 29, of 711 Houston, suffered severe head and neck injuries when the car he rode in crashed into a metal light standard at East Tenth and Roberts. He was rushed to Northwest Texas Hospital by a Blackburn-Shaw ambulance and described as serious but not critical. Police said driver John L. McKnight swerved to avoid an oncoming car, leaving his vehicle severely damaged and the light standard shattered.

Gov. Allan Shivers named a 537 member Texas Economy Commission to survey the executive branch for efficiency and cost savings. The group will assess administration of services and how tax dollars are used, with added members to be named by the lieutenant governor and House speaker.
