President Truman's famine emergency committee urged Americans to cut wheat by 40 percent and fats by 20 percent to aid hungry abroad. It proposed 39 ways including open face pies, fewer loaves, single bread rolls, and features substitutions such as fruit desserts.
Miller Ainsworth, president of the 36th Division Association, was told March 18 may suit for him and two other division members to discuss the Rapido River attack with the House Military Affairs Committee. The Texans, largely from the 36th, seek a formal congressional inquiry into alleged tactical errors by Gen. Mark W. Clark that led to about 2,200 deaths, though details of the battle were not to be discussed.
Elmer Ralph Dearing 21, a Navy dischargee, died after his 1941 Studebaker collided with a westbound freight train at Grand Avenue Santa Fe crossing. He served in the Southwest Pacific and Philippines, discharged January 13 at Norman Oklahoma. Dearing lived with relatives in Amarillo and Muleshoe. his body was taken to St Anthony’s Hospital.
OPA announced a 10 percent sugar ration increase for the April to June period. Commercial packets of vegetables and canned fruits also rise. No change for institutional rations this month or next, but May June may see increases. Industrial sugar users include bakers and makers of preserves and pharmaceuticals.
Braniff Airways filed with the Civil Aeronautics Board for two Dallas to Pacific routes. One would fly Dallas Fort Worth through Fort Worth Lubbock Roswell Phoenix and San Diego. A second proposal would route via Dallas Amarillo and continue from New York with multiple eastern and midwestern stops to San Diego and Phoenix.
In early returns from Buenos Aires and Tucuman, Tamborini leads Peron by votes in two provinces. First box results show Tamborini ahead in Buenos Aires and Tucuman, with Peron maintaining larger city and provincial leads overall in the national count. Ballots from other provinces push Peron toward an electoral vote lead.

Rumors sweep Amarillo that Amarillo Army Air Field may be reactivated for Air Force mechanic training. Officials say no official notice has been issued by the Air Forces Technical Training Command in St. Louis. The field has been on stand by since the last class graduated March 8.
Soviet forces formally handed over Mukden to Chinese authorities and six factories, with 7,000 puppet troops reported liberated. Changchun and Harbin saw fresh Soviet movements as Beijing and Chungking prepared to extend truce-enforcement into any evacuated Manchurian areas.

Washington reports a drastic order restricting commercial construction in favor of houses with aims to delay non essential factories and buildings. Housing Chief Wyatt said the rule will come in days, permitting some factories if they supply needed employment or essential goods. Senate leaders push to restore housing subsidies and price controls amid a lumber export study by OPA to curb incentives for mills.
The speaker argues that tying incentives to actual production will avoid inflation and keep home prices affordable for veterans. He contends premium payments for producers are more effective than higher price ceilings in spurring output without harming veterans.
