A reprint of Gov. James Stephen Hogg’s veto message from 1893 condemns federal sugar bounty subsidies. The piece urges Texans to read the veto to reflect state sovereignty and warns that accepting the bounty would surrender independent autonomy, inviting federal control over sugar production and regulation.
In Woodward Oklahoma a 39 year old woman Mrs Harold Costello was killed when she sent her two children under a stationary freight train and it started moving. The incident occurred around noon as the Costello family returned from the grocery. Her two children Billy Patricia and Harold Dewayne watched in horror as the train dragged her body about 85 feet before the emergency brake halted the engine. Several railroad cars passed over the body before the stop. Costello’s husband works at a local tank company and the family includes four other children aged 11 to 16.
Dumas March 10 special John R Hawk Williams about 40 an insurance agent in Dumas died shortly after 10 pm when his car struck a pillar at an overpass of Fourway and overturned north on Highway 87 He was pronounced dead at the scene He had lived in Dumas since 1938 Survivors include his wife and two children Body sent to Roxwell Brothers Funeral Home for arrangements pending.
U.S. Weather Bureau reports partly cloudy conditions in Amarillo and vicinity and Northwest Texas from today through Sunday with a slight warming trend, cooling Sunday afternoon in the Panhandle. New Mexico faces generally fair weather tonight with no major changes, highs today in the 55 to 70s.
Washington March 10 AP The House Agriculture Committee backed an administration bill to extend the U S Sugar Act and curb U S purchases from the Dominican Republic. The panel approved the measure 25 6 after an informal 17 15 vote opposing the Dominican option.
New York AP big names fled for cover as Ed Sullivan and Jack Paar clashed over pay rates. Sullivan capped appearances at 320 dollars, contrasting with his 7500 dollar usual fee. Myron Cohen canceled from Paar, while Joey Bishop, Jonathan Winters, and Ann Bancroft backed Paar. Phyllis Diller faced choosing between Sullivan and Paar, weighing loyalty against money.
The Senate approved an emergency one year feed grain control program by 52 to 26 votes rejecting the Kennedy administration's compliance clause. Memphis March 16 Four hoodlums from the Oklahoma Panhandle three ex convicts were questioned by Texas and Oklahoma officers after a roadblock net around Turkey. They face burglary charges in a $52.15 theft from West Texas Utility Co. in Turkey and will be arraigned Saturday. The Merwins Melvin 28 Samuel 22 James Wesley 27 from Cimarron County Okla and Kenneth Ray Spears 25 held in Hall County jail were stopped at 2 30 am in Sam Merwin's 1956 model car at Highways 86 and 256.

Wellington columnist D E Scott notes a pundit predicting four million clerical jobs lost to automation. He jokes that displaced career girls might marry robotic spouses, suggesting a transistorized husband could fix issues like cold feet in bed with a good thermostat.
At St. Matthew's Church in Pampa, Bishop George H. Quarterman urged over 400 delegates from the Diocese of Northwest Texas to face wartime social pressures without fear. He warned against communism, moral weakness, government paternalism, and the scapegoating of neighbors amid a “trying time,” urging active engagement with church and world affairs.
Los Angeles March 10 AP A unemployed maintenance man Douglas William Johnson found 240000 in tens and twenties lying in the street and alerted the FBI. The money was being moved from United California Bank to the Federal Reserve Bank when a Brinks bag door released trapping the cash outside the truck. Police traced the door release to a misaligned internal handle after questioning the crew.
