Gene Autry, an 840 pound Hereford shown by Bobby Neal of Rochelle McCullough County, won grand champion in the baby beef division at the Amarillo Fat Stock Show. The steer bred by Jamie Brook of Brady beat an 870 pound rival Chauncey shown by H C Shaw of Hedley for purple ribbon. Shaw’s calf, bred by Bert Hale, earned reserve champion and the $50 Victory Bond award from the Panhandle Livestock Association as best Panhandle calf. Judges shifted calves early before favoring Bert Hale’s and Jim Hutchinson’s standings, with Donley County winning the best county group.
