Calamitous Southern California quake toll rises to eighty known dead and 2,500 injured with Los Angeles and Long Beach hardest hit. Multiple aftershocks, fires, and widespread destruction blanket the region as emergency crews organize responses.
Italian assassin Giuseppe Zangara was condemned to die in the electric chair for killing Chicago Mayor Anton J. Cermak. He vocally defied Judge Aly O. Thompson declaring “I’m no scared” and calling the judge a crook man as deputies moved him from the room.
President Roosevelt ordered a return to full banking operations by sound institutions likely by Monday. The plan includes licensing for state and federal banks and allows in transit checks to be charged to the signer.
