House Judiciary Committee votes 1410 to 10 to impeach a Illinois jurist charged with high misdemeanor conduct triggering formal proceedings. Officials say the action moves the case toward a potential Senate trial.
The House judiciary committee, by 14 to 6, recommends impeachment proceedings against Judge George W. English of Illinois Eastern District for high misdemeanor in office. Charges include alleged bankruptcy manipulation and power usurpation. If approved, the Senate must vote. two thirds needed for conviction and removal.
A Texas oil producer near Pampa reports a sensational discovery in Wilcox Number Three with a bit penetrating sixteen feet into sand. The well indicates strong subsurface potential and could signal further productive zones nearby.
The Wilcox No 3 well six miles southeast of Pampa is flowing at more than 500 barrels daily after deepening to 2881 feet. In the first four hours it produced 135 barrels, rising to 27 barrels per hour by last night, amid a Panhandle oil field boom and nearby wells planned by Wilcox and other operators.
Farm relief delegates in Washington heard Edwin T. Meredith outline a bill to create an agriculture stabilization commission. It would guarantee minimum prices for wheat corn sugar cotton butter and wool, adjust yearly, buy surplus, and tax farmers at one half of one percent to cover losses and handling. The delegation resumes testimony tomorrow.
The coast guard ordered creation of the nation s first dry air corps. A farm relief plan was sent to the House agriculture committee. Senator Robinson of Arkansas pressed the tariff commission issue. Congress opened a probe into Great Lakes water diversions. Ambassador Sheffield delivered a note to Mexico over church expulsions. The House judiciary committee urged impeachment of Federal Judge George W English.
In Atlanta Georgia on March 9 a jailyard mutiny left guard P H Newsom shot and badly wounded, two guards Guy Reid and J P Barfield beaten, and eight county convicts escaping in a camp truck. Bloodhounds were sent after them.
Mrs Henry Landes led Dr Edwin J Brown by 177 votes for Seattle mayor as unofficial returns from 20 precincts were tallied. Landes 3061 Brown 2884. City manager plan led by about 200 votes. Brown is the current mayor.
Georgia congressman W D Upshaw endorses a national poll by NEA Service and 700 newspapers to gauge wet and dry support. He argues the poll will show strength of the enemy and support constitutional loyalty to the eighteenth amendment while condemning repeal prospects and praising law and order.
Attorney General Dan Moody filed suit in Travis County against Humble Oil and Refining Company of Houston and John Gaillard for 1,000,000 damages plus recovery of Hog Island and 10,000 rentals. The claim states Abbel Smith failed to perfect patents to about 200 acres in San Jacinto Bay and that the oil firm took possession of the land about a year ago in the Goose Creek oil district.
WeWoka Oklahoma March 9 W C Laurer and R E Owen pleaded not guilty to a joint charge of embezzlement when arraigned before county judge T O Criswell today. They were remanded to ail in default of 25000 bond. The date for the preliminary hearing was not set as neither man had an attorney present. Laurer was president of the First National Bank of Kiefer and Owens cashier of the Seminole State Bank of Seminole.
Abilene March 9 4 Funeral services for Claiborne W Merchant 89 pioneer Texas cattleman and Confederate veteran read at his home. He helped found Abilene in 1881 and named Amarillo later, earning the title father of Abilene. Born August 1 1836 he died of influenza after a long illness. CONTINUED ON PAGE NINE.
Fort Worth Texas March 9 Secretary of Agriculture William Jardine arrived to attend the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show and to address the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers association. He noted farmers have improved since the postwar slump and that the postwar dollar buys 88 or 89 cents. He plans to speak at 10 a.m. tomorrow then travel to Dallas, Friday to Memphis and Saturday night to Washington.
Charles L. Harty of Dallas announces his candidacy for Texas attorney general. He pledges an honest administration and fidelity to clients from 14 years in practice. A Texas native, Harty has lived in Dallas eight years and is a Democrat opposed to secret political organizations and Fergusonism.
Two teenage bandits robbed the Bank of India 22 miles west of Lawton Oklahoma shortly before noon today, escaping with $415.85 in a motor car pursued by a sheriff’s posse. A third accomplice waited with the car at a remote point as deputies circulated in the area. Local police described the men as youths and sought further information.
Washington March 9 The Senate adopted the Smoot resolution ordering the tariff commission to furnish its minutes marking the first step in the long heralded inquiry.
U S Ambassador Sheffield acts on instruction from the State Department at Washington to present a formal note on Mexican policy. The move signals outreach regard ing bilateral affairs and follows diplomatic channels established in the capital.
Washington reports Mexico’s new policy on religious teaching prompted Ambassador Sheffield to deliver a note to Mexico seeking protection for American churchmen. The issue followed threats of arrest in Vera Cruz against Rev. F. K. Krill, with Jalapa authorities apparently leaning to allow him to stay. The note aims to record U.S. stance while acknowledging Mexico’s right to expel clergy.
Dudley Read, 31, Tampa board of trade photographer, was abducted and whipped by five masked men but not seriously hurt and plans to return to work today. His wife, her parents Mr and Mrs G L Wendleborn, and her brother H E Wendleborn were detained for eight hours and released. they deny knowledge of the assault.

District Attorney Lloyd Fletcher refused to seek the death penalty in the Frank Crutchfield trial for robbing the First National Bank of White Deer with firearms. The case, moved from Panhandle to Amarillo, will involve about 75 jurors and up to 45 witnesses. Mood and Fletcher prosecute, with Johnson Dooley Simpson and Newt Willis defending.
Amarillo voters approved a 240000 school bond issue by a margin exceeding 20 to 1 in yesterday’s election. Central Fire station returned 165 for and 4 against while the courthouse tally was 105 to 9. The bonds fund a new southwest building and additions to North Amarillo and San Jacinto schools.
Mrs B F Yoakum wife of a well known railroad official died at her New York home. She was a daughter of Mr and Mrs W A Bennett pioneer residents of San Antonio. The funeral will be held in New York Thursday.
San Antonio March 9 Justice of the Peace L F Boltz announced a verdict of murder and death by own action after a coroner's inquest into the double knife attack on Carl and Nora Wiley found in a blood pool in their home yesterday.
Fred Haynie former Carter County official was sentenced for embezzling 145000. Judges Freeman Walden combined counts to run concurrently, totaling 31 years in state penitentiary. Sixteen counts across two indictments led to the unified term.
