The administration's $6 billion Vietnamese war tax bill was amended to provide monthly payments for 1.8 million elderly people not now eligible for Social Security. The Republican amendment, adopted 45 to 40, would pay $44 per month for individuals or $66 for couples, costing about $750 million yearly. Senator Russell Long fought to kill it, saying the bill should raise money for the war rather than expand government expenses.
George Gessner, who admitted leaking nuclear weapon secrets to Russia, is released after the government drops charges for lack of evidence beyond his confession.
