A packed Amarillo crowd watched a long colorful parade from Third to Sixth Avenues, honoring Texas and national figures. Governors, mothers in law from multiple states, 13 bands, guardsmen, artillery units, and youth groups led the procession before the Municipal Auditorium as dust quieted after a windy day.
Five thousand mothers gathered in Amarillo for a Texas Mother-in-Law Day observance led by Governor Jimmy Allred. A Ben Turpin parade impressed crowds as honorees crowned as the most distinguished mothers-in-law in Texas. The day, begun after a national wave of Sweet Pea tribute, drew attendees from Panhandle towns and neighboring states.
More than twenty women entered the rolling pin contest held at the corner of Eighth Avenue and Polk Street at 12:10 today as part of the Mother in Law Day celebration. Ben Turpin will participate and Fox Movietone News will record the event with sound for a reel. The public is invited to watch how a sound picture is produced.
Beverly Hills, March 5. A veteran Republican governor says he is on the Townsend Plan waiting list and questions funding. He warns against worrying about affordability and cites automobile sales as evidence of economic resilience.
Texas Governor Jimmy Allred toured Amarillo with a packed schedule after arriving by Fort Worth and Denver line at 7:45 AM. He delivered ten speeches, toured Palo Duro Canyon, attended Panhandle Cattlemen’s Association sessions, and met thousands of residents and event participants before returning at 9:45 PM.
The U S Weather Bureau predicts rain or snow tonight for Amarillo and vicinity with a low near 25. West Texas foresees partly cloudy in the south, rain or snow in the north, and a hard freeze Wednesday night. Livestock owners in the north receive a general warning.
W H Clark a Dallas attorney was named director of the Federal Housing Administration in Texas Oklahoma and New Mexico. He succeeds Walter D Cline of Wichita Falls who resigned to become managing director of the 1936 Texas Centennial.
FAIRVIEW Oklahoma March 5 three leaders of the Granite re formatory break of 32 convicts were captured west of here. Red haired Malloy Kuykendall was shot by posse men as he emerged from a dugout his pistol firing. All three were armed and a stolen pistol and shotgun were found among their weapons. Posse men from three counties aided by guards and state operatives fired between 60 and 100 shots. Kuykendall and 18 year old W L Baker Jr both captured. Dale Stansill 22 fled then surrendered.
Gov. James V. Allred spoke to Panhandle cowmen at the 19th Panhandle Livestock Association session in Amarillo, praising the cattle industry’s rebound from doldrums. He outlined relief for drought counties highway improvements and a state planning board while lauding the cattle reduction program and introducing Col. Ernest O. Thompson and Big Bull Ranch figure Colonel Old Honest Tack.
In Louisville on March 5 a neighborhood expedition recovered Marion Haynie a 13 year old who found items from boys pockets including two baseballs a sunshade beans steel balls gum resin kite string and paper scraps indicating the era is ending with this notable exception.
A Rome announcement says a preliminary agreement to neutralize an East Africa border zone six kilometers wide has been reached at Addis Ababa. Five more ships sail from Sicily and Naples with troops and munitions as negotiations continue.
J. D. Special, a junior Hereford calf owned by 14 year old J. D. Jordan of Art Mason County, won Grand Champion at the Amarillo Fat Stock Show Panhandle event. Shamrock Lad was runner up at the stock show in progress.
In Bangkok an 11 year old prince Ananda, nephew of ex King Prapadhipok, accepted the throne left by abdication. The official note said he awaits further details from Bangkok while at Lausanne Switzerland where he attends school.
The Texas House of Representatives approved a measure by Rep. J N Reed Bowie 109 to 22 calling for a constitutional amendment to exempt $8000 of homestead value from all taxes except school taxes The plan would classify intangible property to cover revenue loss and ban a general sales tax The move follows last year’s defeat of classification and coincides with legislative talks on state prohibition amendments slated for next August.

Pope Pius in Vatican City on March 5 urged Rome's Lent preachers to oppose the new cult of nudism. He warned the paganized life of today shows wantonness surpassing ancient paganism and called nudity a horrible blasphemy.
William C. Balfour, 72, pioneer of Old Tascosa and former Oldham County tax collector, died suddenly at his Tascosa ranch. Funeral services were held at his home with a Masonic ceremony, burial at Tascosa. Survived by widow Myra M. Balfour and six children. services by N.S. Griggs & Sons of Amarillo.
Downtown sale opens at 9 this morning at City Drug No 1 517 Polk Street for the Ted Shawn and His Men performance Friday night at the Municipal Auditorium. Front parquet 165 rear parquet 1.10 balcony 0.83 and 0.55. Shawn brings eight athletic dancers and a carload of costumes and sets. The troupe has enjoyed strong success on tour and Shawn is described as the outstanding male dancer in America.
