Washington March 4 AP A partial power outage hit the Capitol as the southern filibuster against a civil rights bill extended. Senator A S Monroney said a link between the outage and floor pressure existed while Sen McClellan continued a strenuous anti filibuster stance and warned advocates would return next year for more laws.
A 17 year old mother Mrs Mary Louise Rodrigues and her two children Mary Louise aged 21 months and Freddy Jr eight months died of apparent gas suffocation in a small two room farmhouse near Olton. They had moved there that morning with husband Freddy Rodrigues employed on the McGill farm. The heater and open gas burner likely exhausted oxygen in the 10 by 20 foot dwelling. The husband discovered the bodies on his return from town.
A sweeping winter storm crippled the Northeast and parts of the Midwest, with Boston and Providence reporting record snowfalls, and several states tallying high death and damage tolls. Wind gusts, blizzard conditions, and power outages disrupted daily life as Congress faced storm impacts.

A head on collision on State Highway 152 near Borger killed Kenneth Lavon Janow 24 of Skellytown instantly and fatally injured Arthur Maurice Jones 46 of Borger who died later at North Plains Hospital. Janow's body was recovered after nearly two hours of rescue work and both men were linked to local employers. Jones was en route home from Canadian.
Felix Ortegon an 18 year old from Kress was found dead near a county road wreck scene five miles northeast of Hart. Castro County Sheriff Jack Cartwright said cause of death undetermined whether due to exposure or injuries from the wreck. He rode with two male companions last Wednesday night who said Ortegon grabbed the steering wheel before the accident.
Regional readers are told to blame the weather for ongoing snow and cold in the Amarillo area. Forecasters report light snow from flurries and continued cold with occasional sun. Highs near 33 degrees, lows around 9 to 7, with sites like Perryton and Dalhart dipping to single digits.
A Salt Lake City woman answering her doorbell at 7:30 Friday morning faced two gunmen who soon staged a $33,877 bank robbery and hid in a closet as police closed in. Milton Jacobson and Edwin Albaugh were charged with robbery and kidnapping after forcing the woman to drive to the bank and empty the cash into a briefcase. The loot was recovered.
A French freighter unloading munitions for Fidel Castro's Cuban army exploded at a Havana harbor pier. Officials say 75 to 100 killed and 200 injured. authorities suspect sabotage as fires and a second blast ripped through dockside buildings. Firefighters, pier workers, and witnesses described a chaotic scene with bodies scattered and shrapnel flying.
The Big Ten voted to end post season competition in all sports after rejecting a Rose Bowl renewal. Key moves: 5-5 vote kills Rose Bowl contract worth about 300000, 64 to ban individual Pasadena appearances, and a motion to end all athletics with conference play.
