About 1,500 cattlemen from the Southwest attend the Panhandle Livestock Association's 14th annual convention in Amarillo. The day features a 7 o clock business session followed by the Third Annual Baby Beef Club show and sale and the annual auction of registered Herefords.
A day of events in Amarillo features a hotel hosted call show, a luncheon for visiting Ladies of the Chamber, a Hereford Breeders sale at 1:00, concerts at the Herring Hotel Lobby and West Texas State Teachers College, Tulsa Boys Band, Old Fiddlers Contest in the Auditorium, and dancing at Amarillo Hotels Athletic Club with an Old Fashioned Square Dance at Palo Duro Hotel.
The meeting highlighted two major auction sales along with a business session that adopted a strong resolution urging enactment of a protective tariff on cattle and hides. The note continues on page 18, column 2.
In New York on March 3, banana oil and alcohol fumes used in hat stiffening sickened a dozen workers at the Alvy Hat Co on West 88th Street and affected most of the remaining 100 employees. Ambulance surgeons treated seven women and others at the shop sent home.
Forecast for Amarillo and vicinity calls for Tuesday partly cloudy and warmer. West Texas outlook unsettled and warmer with New Mexico expected to stay fair and warmer in the extreme east. Historical hourly temperatures and high and low values from yesterday are noted in the report.
In Hall County district court, Mamie Byrd of Turkey, mother of four, received a one year penitentiary term for liquor law violations. Co defendant Mrs. Lee Evans, a 24 year old widow with five children, got an eight year suspended sentence. jury urged a pardon. Evans testified her husband died a year ago and she ran a filling station at Turkey.
Two Dallas high school boys Raymond Snoga and Roscoe Hendrix faced a district court jury and received five year terms on each of two robbery charges and two years on an assault to rob, totaling 12 years with recommended concurrent sentences. Snoga said he only sought thrills and was inspired by hijackings in newspapers.
The Kansas Senate passed a Converse bill to exempt foreign owned personal property taxed elsewhere and brought into Kansas from taxation. It targets cattle shipped into Kansas for grazing to avoid double taxation, awaiting Gov. Reed's signature.
City Drug store on Polk street sold seats for the Old Fiddlers Contest and Amateur Night at the city auditorium tonight. Tri-State Fair president Wilbur C. Hawk says it will be the biggest entertainment for the price with 41 fiddlers and 12 amateurs and $200 in cash prizes. Vaudeville acts accompany the contests. Best seats are $1. back section 75 cents. balcony 50 cents.
Attorney General Mitchell sustains Commerce Department policy to publish only general information on aircraft accidents rather than specific crash details demanded by members of Congress.
The Day in Washington reports Senate debate on unemployment conditions and continued action on free list provisions of the tariff bill. Taft's condition improved slightly as the Supreme Court granted three of twenty four petitions for review.
Special to The News reports a planned four way Burlington system extension across West Texas. Proposals include lines from Plainview to Tucumcari via Dimmitt, from Plainview to Roswell New Mexico, a Wichita Valley spur to Plainview, and a Stamford to Fort Worth link. Over 600 miles of new track are envisioned, with a Wednesday meeting to gather local data for Burlington officials.
The Supreme Court announced a decision on a disputed prohibition enforcement issue as advocates for repeal prepare to present further arguments before the House Judiciary Committee. The six hearings over three weeks have featured wets and drys arguing over repeal or modification of the Eighteenth Amendment with drys set to call witnesses tomorrow.
Work on a wide graded loop pavement from the county highway through Panhandle is under way. Paving will start once the grade settles. A broad curve will connect with county pavement west of town and the route will meet the city pavement near the light and water plant. The completed loop will let visitors view Panhandle’s business district with a safer broad road.
Nicholson expedition explorers discover an unexplored chamber in Carlsbad Cavern with a 1200 by 400 foot layout and a high ceiling. Bat skeletons lie on the floor and a 12 inch leg bone from an unknown animal is set for biologist identification. plans include multi day trips, remote tunnel exploration, and underground radio work.
The annual Old Fiddler's Contest sponsored by the Tri State Fair Association fills the city auditorium tonight with tunes like Tom and Jerry Sally Goodin Rideing Old Paint and Leadin Old Ball. Dr O H Loyd of Vega hosts as master of ceremonies with judges named but kept private until after tonight's decisions.
G W Roach was sentenced to 90 days after conviction on swindling involving a bad check. His attorney filed a motion for a new trial. The robberies case against Pee Wee Johns and Eddie Davis was continued due to absent defense witnesses.
Caprock Bankers Association holds its fifth semi annual convention in Lockney with 125 members and visitors attending. President W B Lee of Spur presiding. Elder J F Arceneaux delivers the invocation and gives the welcome. Continued on page 19.
Houston Texas March 8 Prison Board votes to halt admissions to Huntsville state penitentiary and farm units until system capacity returns to normal. Resolution cites overcrowding and safety, directing transfer agents and wardens to stop receiving prisoners now and issue further notice when space is available. Board members present include W A Paddock and A C Scott.
W T Tolbert of El Paso reports the first conveyance at the convention, selling 8 000 yearling and 2 year old steers to Kilpatrick Brothers of Beatrice Nebraska for May delivery. The cattle, owned by Harry Jameson of Denver, are on Arizona pastures after a fall purchase in Derm ing New Mexico. Tolbert leads El Paso based Tolbert Livestock commission company and notes Amarillo remains a key cattle center. He says cattle wintered well in El Paso and outlook remains optimistic.
