An Oklahoma man, Gilbert F. Elliott, 66, of Stillwater, died in a three vehicle collision five miles east of Conway on I-40 amid high winds and dust. Georganna Elliott, 60, of Stillwater, survived in satisfactory condition, while Marshall Loney, 25, and Carmen Loney, 57, both of Diamond, Ark., were hospitalized in serious condition.
Eight miners were trapped for 32 hours after a flood in a Kocher Coal Co tunnel. Ronald Adley, 37, of Tower City, spoke through a 60 foot borehole as rescue teams fight through debris to reach others feared missing.
Spanish born Father Jose Manuel Rubio Diaz aged 58 living in Rhodesia for 28 years was found battered to death in Gwelo in Rhodesia’s midlands. Guerrillas led by Joshua Nkomo called for immediate majority rule and warned against compromise in talks with Prime Minister Ian Smith.

Lewis C. Griffin 76, a retired Santa Fe Railway telegrapher and two time failed candidate, filed for Place 4 on the Amarillo City Commission. He joins five others, including incumbent Clay Briggs, and vows honesty and opposition to alcohol at the Civic Center Complex. Griffin, a charter member of the Amarillo Senior Citizens Association, says he will run as an independent with no special backing. He retired from the railroad in 1962 after returning from Los Angeles where he was night manager of the 1st Street Telegraph Office. He ends filing as the last candidate before deadline, bringing total candidates to 20 in five races.
The House Rules Committee moved to a quick floor vote on a Carter administration tax bill offering a $50 rebate to many, with changes excluding higher income families and boosting standard deductions. It would also extend credits for small businesses and keep 1976 tax reductions, aiming to cut taxes for individuals and families.
