A four-engine transport plane carrying 81 passengers on a casino flight to Nevada disappeared in a fierce Lake Tahoe snowstorm. Search and rescue efforts were hampered by high winds and extensive weather conditions.
Eight year old Tommy O Connell nearly fell through a thin pond ice while testing its strength with two friends. Volunteer fireman George Jackson braved the broken ice, pulled the boy to safety, and Tommy was treated for exposure before returning home.
An Air Force fighter crashed into a rural house near Middle River Wisconsin killing the pilot. Mrs Julieann Nordlund 45 was seriously injured in the blaze and in the basement when hit. Col Earl Pastian parachuted to safety and was treated for neck burns. The pilot remains unidentified.
Albany UPI reports Nelson A Rockefeller proposes a cabinet level position titled first secretary of government to stand after the vice president in presidential succession. The plan would remove House Speaker John McCormack and Senate President Pro Tempore Carl Hayden from the line of succession.
A Royal Canadian destroyer rescued 34 crew members from a Libyan tanker that split in two 390 miles east of Boston as a storm raged. Two crewmen died during the rescue, with 16 others saved earlier, and multiple survivors were hauled aboard the Athabaskan or by lifeboats.
Greek naval units including destroyers and troop transports departed Crete for exercises in the Aegean as Turkey advances units near Cyprus. Defense Minister Garoufalis described the maneuvers as routine though many see them linked to the Cyprus crisis amid Cyprus demonstrations on Crete and Lesbos.
Firestorms driven by March winds destroyed entire city blocks in two cities and a half block in another, causing millions in damage. Grass and woodland fires burned thousands of acres across the Midwest, injuring firefighters and destroying businesses including a Duro Paper plant. A crash amid smoke killed a couple in Illinois. Baraboo hotel guests escaped unharmed.
Texas marks its 128th birthday at Washington on the Brazos birthplace with Attorney General Waggoner Carr as lead speaker. Descendants of Texas Declaration signers attend, and a tribute honors Sam Houston on his 71st birthday date, with many descendants expected.
The Britannia Bonaventure Good Luck crashed near Glantetter Mountain east of Innsbruck after a fog shrouded flight from Belfast to London. All 75 passengers and 8 crew perished, including four families, with rescue teams unable to reach the wreckage until Sunday due to heavy snow.
In San Mateo on Saturday the CRA committee backed Barry Goldwater over Nelson Rockefeller and Harold Stassen with a 36 to 9 vote to abstain on endorsing a candidate. Supporters call it a victory as Goldwater eyes the March 13 to 15 convention in Prescott. California’s 46 votes loom as factions push for unity ahead of the July convention in San Francisco.

A Pacific snowstorm closed U S 40 over Donner Summit and backed traffic to Reno while a Paradise Airlines flight from San Jose with 81 aboard vanished. U S 50 near Lake Tahoe stayed open but congested, per the California Highway Patrol.
A storm blocked visibility at Ham ilton Air Force Base near San Francisco with zero visibility reported. A Western Air Rescue pilot holding over bake Tahoe informed airport at 11 25 a m that weather made search impossible. A rescue team remained on standby as snow fell along the High Sierra.
Kael Alexander and Coleman McSpadden were sentenced to federal prison on five counts of fraud and conspiracy linked to the Billy Sol Estes case. Harold Orr of Amarillo died recently. all three were connected to Superior Manufacturing Co via phony chattel mortgages. The men face parole review and are subpoenaed to appear March 16 at Clements' trial in Wichita Falls.
