The High Plains Research Station at Halfway Hale County reports 1958 skip row tests showing two cotton rows with four empty rows yield higher net income per acre than solid planting. Four-row skip plots averaged 1 218 pounds lint per four rows, up 32 percent over solid cotton.
Union employees at the Gulf Oil Corp refinery in Port Arthur Texas voted to accept a one year contract ending a 33 day strike. The pact includes a five percent wage increase retroactive to January 16 and preserves traditional craft lines while giving flexibility on job classifications. The plant would reopen Monday if ratified and was reached after days of talks mediated by Ray Majure.

Washington March 1 A top government scientist said man must accept radiation risks as he accepts other hazards like auto travel. Dr Lauriston S Taylor chief of the atomic and radiation division at the National Bureau of Standards said radiation advantages outweigh dangers. The Senate House Atomic Energy Committee released a report on employee radiation hazards and workers compensation ahead of hearings starting March 10. Dr Taylor called a zero risk goal unlikely, noting it is a matter of philosophy and wisdom rather than pure science.

Officials said next attempt would likely be Monday night as weather and technical difficulties hinder flight tests at Cape Canaveral while Jupiter Polaris and Thor-Able rockets already cleared for launch were delayed.

In Bishop California on March 1 a boy about 9 or 10 years old was found crying with relief after police located him in a cheap hotel 200 miles from home. He had been abducted by a former mental patient and had apparently suffered beatings before the arrest.
William Harris Elwell 28 is jailed on kidnapping charges after police found Buddy Murray and his younger brother Richard safe. Elwell, described as dangerous and previously mentally ill, lured the boys with chocolate milk then fled toward Bishop with authorities tracing tickets and a 1:25 a.m. bus drop. Parents and officers relieved as rescue ends a daylong search.
