The mangled body of co pilot Joseph Henry Dowd 26 of Dallas was found near Exell about 35 miles north of Amarillo after falling from a Denver bound Pioneer Air Lines DC 3 while investigating a door fault in pre dawn darkness. An official investigation is pending.
Wichita Falls police and FBI examined the getaway car used in yesterday's payroll robbery at Shepnard Air Force Base. The $33,000 theft was carried out by a lone robber. The car was found parked at Bob Anderson's home. Mrs. Anderson observed it noon yesterday and notified authorities. The manhunt involved Army, state and county officers.
Price Administrator Michael V. DiSalle authorized an interim 3.2 percent increase for automobiles, allowing dealers to pass only the dollar and cent rise from manufacturers to customers. The move, aimed at offsetting rising production costs, extends the price freeze at Dec 1 levels for 60 days.
Amarillo banks and the clearing house will not close today in observance of Texas Independence Day. Officers of the Amarillo American and First National Banks reached the decision days ago. City and county offices remain open, while some state offices may close.
DiSalle said the move is an interim measure as prices rise to 2057.50 after a 2,625 percent hike from the frozen factory levels. Manufacturers including General Motors Ford and Chrysler had previously announced 5 to 7 percent increases on 1951 models. The 1951 Amarillo Fat Stock Show ends today with the 4 H and FFA boys stock sale at the Tri-State Fairgrounds auction arena. Washington March 1 A million railroad workers won an immediate 12 percent raise for non operating staff including clerks machinists and shop workers retroactive to Feb 1 and likely 4 or 5 cents more in April. The agreement caps four months of talks without union ratification and may include productivity raises later if government stability permits.
In central Korea near Hoengsong Marines and infantry faced stiff resistance as Chinese and North Korean forces planned a counter-offensive. General MacArthur warned that up to 31 divisions could be involved despite losses and supply issues. Marines captured key ridges, with heavy fighting on heights northwest of Hoengsong and along the Pangnim-Hoengsong road. Air battles occurred as B 29s and MiGs clashed in the northwest, while ground troops pressed on to delay any Communist drive this month.
