President-elect Roosevelt arrives in New York and begins discussing the national finance situation with William H. Woodin, aiming for prompt action on a new deal after his inauguration.
Miss Frances Perkins, newly chosen as the first woman U.S. cabinet member and New York industrial commissioner, pleads for minimum wage laws for women, unemployment insurance, and shorter working days and weeks. She addresses the labor committees, argues for wage standards, warns of wage declines, and supports tideover aid to counter future depressions.
The Journal reports Andrew J. Volstead of St. Paul, author of the Volstead Act, will be relieved of his duties as legal advisor for the Northwest Prohibition Unit after the Democratic administration takes office. William J. Moran of St. Paul, active in Roosevelt support, is expected to succeed him.
Financial markets opened March with gains in stocks led by Eastman Kodak and American Telephone while bonds saw selling of U S government issues. Mayor Anton Cermak was moved to a specially built oxygen room on the hospital sun porch in Miami. In Sand Springs near Tulsa, a cotton mill family perished when a wood stove fire swept through their cottage early today. Mrs. Ernest Kepner and five of her ten children died, while the father and a 17 year old son Earl survived with others escaping. The dead include twins Robert and Charlotte aged 13 Jewell 11 Wayne 10 and Frank 7.
Three men identified as burglars who operated in Farwell and Bovina last Thursday night, breaking into post offices and three other Farwell buildings. Sheriff Hall said state or federal officers will bring the trio to Farwell to face charges. Wilbur Turner Paul Trull and J G Moore were arrested at Guthrie after Oklahoma officers found them armed at a filling station. A money sack bearing the American State Bank of Amarillo name helped identify them.
Washington March 1 President Hoover signed the $102 million appropriations bill for state justice commerce and labor departments. The action carries an $8.44 million item for the prohibition bureau and sets funding for federal agencies.

A pageant presented by the Amarillo Fat Stock Show Association will be staged Monday night at 8 at Municipal Auditorium. The Rainbow Pageant features 250 Panhandle girls with 50 princesses and maids of honor as visiting royalty, culminating in the crowning of the Fat Stock Show queen, Miss Frances Mayhugh of Plainview, by Col Erasmus Tack. The show opens with Dave Derden's Orchestra providing an overture and colorful panorama, interspersed with specialty numbers by Amarillo performers and a large cast advancing in stages.
In Houston on March 19 W C Carter a 58 year old bridge gang foreman for the Southern Pacific was shot to death at his home during a scuffle with his wife over a shotgun. His stepson Ivan B Watkins 29 was arrested charged with murder and held without bond. Watkins said I shot him in defense of my mother and an examining trial is set for Friday.
